CORRECTION: Mark Millar Talks Nemesis Movie Adaptation

Comic book writer Mark Millar shares his thoughts on the casting for the Nemesis, including the budget for the film, will they stay true to the comic and much more!

UPDATE: Mark Millar contacted CBM to let us know that the MTV interviewer had a bit of a problem understanding his Scottish accent, and got some facts wrong. Get the corrections HERE, or at the MTV link below.

Speaking with MTV, Scottish comic book writer Mark Millar(Kick-Ass, Wanted, The Ultimates) said that the upcoming film version of Nemesis will be a huge budget adaptation and with that they can decide who will play the lead characters.

"They reckon the budget on this thing will probably be around $450 million mark. It's a very expensive film, it’s got a lot of big set pieces. So the nice thing is, it means we can hopefully afford who we want to work with."

He said that Tony Scott is the best director for this movie and is looking forward working with him.

"Tony Scott has to be at the top of the list, he's a Hollywood legend. Every single person in the country probably has at least one of his movies on DVD. So the idea of Tony Scott doing a superhero movie in itself would be exciting, the idea of doing mine is just crazy. It's something I’m very, very exciting about."

He continued saying that he will be a producer along with co-creator of the comic book Steve McNiven.

"I’ve written the comic and I'll serve as a producer, and I always make sure my artists get to be producers as well, which is what I did with J.G. Jones on ‘Wanted’ and John Romita Jr. on Kick-Ass and now Steve McNiven on Nemesis"

As for being true to the comic book he added "I think it should be pretty much identical. I mean, Tony and I talked at length about it. He says one of the directions, though I love it, 'I'd like the guy not to be in a white superhero costume,' and I thought, 'Well, that’s the whole point of it,' so we ended up not agreeing to do that. [But] I think he's going to stay as faithful as he can. It's a big studio picture, [so] we won't have the same kind of control we had with Kick-Ass, which was a much more intimate affair, but I feel very confident in Tony’s hands.

Update: MTV seem to have rectified some of the stuff in the article. They now say that the budget for the film will be 150 Million and that Nemesis WILL don the white costume.

How the HELL can they afford a budget like that?!?!?! WTF??? Do they even realise that they need to make it back and then some??? Are they planning this to be released in 3D???

Bang up job there Tony, completely ignoring the point of the comic. Then we get Sell-Out Millar saying it "should" end up identical so we all know what he's truly saying: "I don't know, i'm completely out of the loop and have no say so. But i'll keep talking out of my ass like i always do."

Awesome find Wolvie09! :) I love this series (it really is one of Millars finest/messed up pieces of work yet) and I'm actually looking forward to this movie more than the majority of other CBM's that are coming out in the next few years! As long as they stay faithful to the comic book of course...

450 million lolol avatar was'nt even that expensive

$450 million has got to be a HUGE exaggeration by Millar. There's nothing in the series that really requires that amount...the plane crash and explosions could all be done with CGI (obviously) and if a movie like Iron Man 2 doesnt need that much, neither will Nemesis!

His quote is somewhat misleading about the suit. Well it ain't clear. So they "DIDN'T agree" to do what exactly? NOT to use the suit or NOT to discard the suit???
sexfoodcomics
sexfoodcomics - 9/29/2010, 10:05 AM
yeah the suit this is confusing, I remember Millar specifically saying he turned down "big name" directors cause they DIDN'T want the suit. And he originally said Scott wanted the suit , now he is saying he doesn't want it? what gives?

They better have the suit, its bad ass!!!

$200 million seems more realistic,no film studio gonna give him $450 million.

avatar cost what $300 million, they wouldn't even give that to cameron to make a movie.

Please stop this crappy super heroes movies. We dont even have a flash or a wonderwoman movie. They are just making too many crappy ones already and I am fine with it as long as the BIG names come first.

i think Milar needs to realize how much a niche audience he has. i mean, his movies make bank but not $450 mil bank... theres room for your style in Hollywood Mark, so i hope you keep making movies. but i think you need to take it down from 11.

Millar may say some iffy things a lot and i wont disagree with anyone who dislikes it. But he was a super nice guy to me and my little sister at a signing one time and at the end of the day i think all you can ask of your creators is that they're cool with the fans. so i'll always be rooting for him
Shaman
Shaman - 9/29/2010, 10:20 AM
JayTopStix- Well... you do have a point. If they put out too many obscure comic book films, the general audience might get tired of the genre before the main ones come out. It would be like putting out a remake of Bram Stoker's Dracula after having gotten hundreds of other vampire movies in the last 5 years. It wouldn't sell as much. For us CB fans, we'll pretty much take em all but for the studios that do it for the money, less money means less CBMs. And that would suck ass!

OdinsBeard- Good point as well! At least he's a nice guy. Imagine if he was a daily outspoken asshole! That would get even more irritating.

ok wait.

Vanity Fair had this in December 2009.... "Los Angeles Times’s John Horn and Claudia Eller cited earlier this month—$280 million for the production, plus marketing costs."

and that was for Avatar!.....this will be approaching double that? no way. That has to be a typo or miscommunication.

Don't know if you guys know but Mark just said on his forums that the budget will actually be $150 million and that Nemesis will have the white costume... The confusion was that the interviewer had trouble understanding his Scottish accent.

OdinsBeard - 9/29/2010, 10:47 AM
Shaman@ lol yeah i doubt he'd last very long. but people must like working with him and i can see why. he's like the Rex Ryan of CBMs.

to your point about the over saturation of CBMS... im not too worried about it. i mean sure people MIGHT get sick of it but never forget we have higher standards than most movie goers. the average idiot doesn't know its a CBM half of the time. and as long as you put in a-list actors people will go see them. if next years johnny depp movie was Nemesis and not Pirates people would go see it because its a depp movie and the last thing on their mind would be "oh god ANOTHER CBM?"

and there will always be those movies based on comics that most people have never heard of - History of Violence, Road to Perdition. so i don't think CBMs are going anywhere. i mean just because all of these fantasy novel adaptations are bombing no one is going "well, thats it for the novel genre!" - there are so many different genres within comics that i think they will continually get tapped for Hollywood films for a long time to come.

i mean theres still 100 Bullets, Chew, Planetary, Criminal, and a bunch of others that could just make great movies without pushing the fact they're CBMs.

WAIT WHAT??? $450MN..So is he saying that he is gonna make a movie with a higher budget than that of freaking avatar...NO WAY...if at most,it would be similar to a marvel movie budget say about $150 to $200Mil..Above that & u are just outta your mind...

CaptainOtter
CaptainOtter - 9/29/2010, 12:10 PM
450 mill? Yeah, thats not happening. Avatar was almost entirely CGI, used nothing but state of the art equipment that was practically invented for the film, and had a huge name backing it. Considering Nemesis would need only a little CGI, and all the special effects would come from more classic explosions and gunfights, this movie doesn't need to cost that much either.

45 million is much more likely. Mark Millar's credibility goes even more downhill for me every time he opens his mouth.

MICHAEL FASSBENDER AS NEMESIS! Im sure they are just trying to get Depp and Pitt in the starring roles, because they bring people in theaters! But still Michael Fassbender is the right way to go with Nemesis!

Great book!! There are certain elements of the story that remind me of Fight Club mixed with Lucky Number Slevin. SO if I had to choose a lead right now it would be Josh Hartnett.
