AVATAR's Stephen Lang Wants To Play The Original Nick Fury; Admits To Not Knowing Who Cable Is

Stephen Lang has been the fan-favourite choice to play Cable for years but he's admitted that he wasn't too bothered being beaten to it by Josh Brolin because he never even really knew who the hero was...

Since playing a Cable lookalike in Avatar, Stephen Lang has been a fan-favourite choice to take on the role of Deadpool's ally on the big screen. He's even campaigned for the part on social media and while that didn't end up panning out for him, the excitement to see Josh Brolin as the character is now huge.

Asked in a recent interview about just how close he came to playing Cable, Lang admitted that it wasn't anywhere near quite as near as you might think. "No, no, I never auditioned for it and you know, truth be told, I’m fairly Cable-ignorant." The actor went on to explain why he isn't all that familiar with the character and it boils down to him no longer actually reading comic books by that point in his life!

"Look, my relationship with Marvel Comics goes back to the ’60s when – and I’m talking about as a reader, I was right there for the first Spider-Man, I was a Fantastic Four fan, I loved Doctor Strange, I love Jim Steranko, Jack “The King” Kirby, all them, Steve Ditko, you know, I knew who they were and I was reading all that stuff, I will say that it – by the time Cable came around. I'd kind of moved on."

As for who he would like to play in the Marvel Universe, Lang said: "My favorite Comic Book of all the Marvel series, was always Sargent Fury and His Howling Commandos. I friggin’ loved Sargent Fury’s Howling Commandos and to me it was always like, I want to be Nick Fury." Will we ever see that become a reality? It seems unlikely but stranger things have happened and he would be a decent fit...

Nah, Sam is great and a total badass. I think we are good. He would be a great Ailing for DC though.

It is a shame that the Howling Commandos were sidelined in the MCU. The book was good..

It's real shame what Marvel Comics did to the OG Fury once the MCU started.

@Doomsday8888 - I have the series they introduced "Fury Junior" in and it makes no sense just an excuse to shoehorn the black Fury into the main universe and kick out the OG. Last thing I remember him in was the villain in original sin about 5 years ago. Such a waste

@SupermansTrunks
Yeah it makes 0 sense, they already had the Ultimate version, way before the MCU, but it wasn't enough.

And now they like to brag about "mhu Legacy" smh ahahah XD

What if they made "Nick Fury" a code name that gets passed down in the MCU? That'd be cool to see in Captain Marvel.

@MarvelDCAllDay - What if Nick Fury remains eternally young thanks to the Formula Infinity and that is a topic to be discussed in upcoming films?

@Repian - But the current Fury is already old

@MarvelDCAllDay - Perhaps every time it is injected, it stops the aging process until the next injection. then in Captain Marvel could have the same physical appearance as today

@Repian - Then, maybe, after IW, they could establish that after many injections the subject can turn white. And there you go, OG Fury is back for phase 4.

After too many injections he can turn into demore barnes.

His performance as Ike Clanton in Tombstone was outstanding. I really hated that character. His hatred, fear, and other negative shit shown right through his eyes and his physical behavior. I didn't know who Stephen was at the time, but I realized that he could F'ing act circles around most of the people around him. Of course, a lot of that really depends upon the role they are given and what the director wants from them.

Either him our Timothy Olyphant for OG Nick Fury would be great to see in the MCU.

I think he would be a great General Sam Lane in a DC Film but I doubt they'll ever use that character in a major capacity.

This guy was never the right guy for Nathan. Too old, for one thing. Brolin signed a 4 picture deal and is 48 years old. By the time he’s done all four films he’ll be in his mid to late 50s. Lang is in his 60s and would be over 70!

I think Brolin is going to kill this role. He just needs to be able to maintain the physique, and his hair needs to get grayer/whiter with every film.
