Hi CBM fans, I've been gathering information on ways to directly punish studios whose names start with F and end with X, for their other blasphemous film (which shall not be named in this article so as not to aid in its promotion in any way) and I have been reminded of another film arriving on that date:
Jack Black and Director Rob Letterman, who to this date hasn't desecrated any beloved comic book properties, have been laying on the charm offensive for this production. They met the fans at a panel at the recent SDCC, and Black had these things to say about their respect for the source material:
"I went to meet R.L. Stine before we started filming, just to get his blessing, make sure he was cool with me playing him, and us making the movie out of his incredibly successful book series. We didn't want to do it without his consent."
Already a difference can be seen between the respect afforded by these film creators to the material that they get to make their living adapting. Stories have come from other unnamed productions where the director and writer have told the actors not to research the comics for inspiration, but Black has done otherwise in his preparation for Goosebumps, explaining:
"I have read quite a few of them, but not all of them; there's like fifty books ... I've read a good portion of those. I've read a lot for my research, and I'm really into them. I love the Goosebumps books because you can blast through one in forty-five minutes and it's like I should have read all fifty-eight of them by now. Give me time."
Here is the entire SDCC panel on streaming video:
Just so everyone knows, Goosebumps exists in several media including the youth novels, and earlier television series c. 1995, which ran for four seasons, but has also been adapted to graphic novel form and released by Scholastic, looking like this:
It seems to me that CBM fans would be well-served to put their support in projects that show reverence and respect towards their source material, without unnecessary and unadvised changes, and preserve the essential spirit of these properties, approaching them with a collaborative attitude, without angering fans and possibly getting their beloved comics series canceled as a result. I think studios should be rewarded for this behaviour with good sales. And for that reason I plan to be there on opening weekend, August 7, 2015, giving my money to Goosebumps movie starring Jack Black!
Now is the time to make your opinions known! What are your plans on August 7, 2015? Will you be buying a ticket for Goosebumps, or to some other unnamed, secretive anti-CBM made by filmmakers with no respect for comics or source material or fans? I know what I'll be doing. Please COMMENT in the discussion below and lets all try to spread this message to our friends so good films can be rewarded and travesties are never perpetrated in the name of CBMs anymore!
In Goosebumps, upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.
