EDITORIAL: Do Critic’s Scores And Box Office Numbers Matter As Much As We Think?

The second of the as much as we think series, where this issue makes people think make or breaks a film. Well, BatmanHeisenberg is here to tackle this pointless issue, hopefully once and for all. Hit the jump for more!

Editorial Opinion

When discussing a film’s quality, often times users of this site or just your average joe brings up critic’s scores, or BO numbers. But does it really matter, and is it a credible argument? I say no. Sometimes people look at the site Rotten Tomatoes, and if a film is considered “rotten”, they say that means it is terrible and you have no right to love that film.

Instead of using their knowledge, using their intellect as an argument, people tend to fall back on other’s opinions. But do critic’s opinions, or how much money a film can get really matter? Does it matter if say, I like A Movie? Often, people say, well B Movie has 30% more than A Movie on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning A Movie sucks and you have no right to that opinion.

So since a film made a billion, that make it untouchable? I see people say, (and just for the sake of argument, I am going to use Iron Man 3 as an example) “well, IM3 made 1.2 Billion, so you have no right to complain about that Mandarin twist!”

Like seriously, people believe if a film made over a certain amount, or got 94% on RT, it is unworthy of criticism? So if 200 people loved or hated a film, and/or a million people decided to watch another movie instead, or watch the movie in question, that is an argument?!

Now, yes it does matter to a certain degree. If a film doesn't make enough, it won’t get a sequel, and if it gets reviewed very well, it might garner some awards, which is good. I want my favorite films to get nominations and sequels.

What I don’t want is people arguing over something so pointless. And that is what it boils down to, other peoples opinions. Someone had an opinion on a film and bashed it, or clappsed it. Someone had money in his/her pocket, and they chose to watch it or avoid it. Simple.

In conclusion, lets not bash each other’s opinions on films, and if you think a film is the best film ever, it is. Don’t let a small group of critcs or money tell you otherwise. Thanks for reading, and see you next time!

I stopped right before TDKR came out. I didn't care anymore, like at all. I loved MoS more than The Avengers, Box Office Number and RT Scores nonwithstanding.

The box office is the only thing that matters. That' why we have 4 Transformers and 1 Dredd.

Thanks, duke! And black an yellow. I say'd it mattered when there are sequels, but is baseless as an argument.

I think sites like RT and box office results do make a difference. To say it carries no weight is nonsense. The general public will see a movie if it has a high rated score, whereas they might be put off by a film that is considered "rotten" by critics. A high score builds a good word of mouth which is really important for a movie (especially if it's the first movie).

However, I don't think it's the final word. I've liked movies that were considered rotten and I've hated movies that were considered fresh. In the end, if you know nothing about a movie.. You're more likely to see a movie that is liked by critics and doing well in the box office rather than paying for something that has been panned by critics and a box office flop.

I agree that everyone should follow their own opinions and not use scores as an excuse.

It matters to an extent...but in no way whatsoever does it define the quality of the film. I generally don't go by rating sites...because I disagree with a lot of their stuff...

Like great movies such as Blade, Transformers, Punisher or Man of Steel being critically panned while mediocrity like Spidey 3, TASM and IM2/IM3 are praised...just dumb...

They only matter if we wanna see a sequel. About the movies that already are out, I can make my own opinion.

Another thing people need to quit doing is this:

Every time someone says something bad about Marvel, they are automatically attacked and accused of beingg a blind DC fanboy and vise versa. So I'm not allowed to have a negative opinion on one company's product without being an ass kisser to the other?

People use that RT thing when they feel they are being attacked. I mean, if a film like 'The Room' were to get, just for kicks, lets say it got a 100% certified fresh rating or whatever, people would hoop and holler calling it the greatest piece of the cinema history to ever grace our eye testicles. It's like we've torn down what we think it means to be a good film, instead it depends on how much cash something made, or what it has on RT. I can respect the people that enjoy 'Iron Man 3' because they enjoyed it. What I do hate is the people who just us RT as if they are better than someone or something. Seriously, if you are using RT for a film, you're practically a whore who is just doing it to be a dick. Put it this way, if 'Man of Steel' got a 100% whatever the hell rating on RT, the trolls would say RT is unreliable and cry as MUCH foul as possible. It is rather disappointing to see how people act when it comes to this shit.

If they made a film following around some dude as he tried to find the most wonderful toilet in the world, and it got 2 trillion dollars, people would say it deserves Oscars and Golden Globes and all the critical acclaim hoop-blah. It's sickening.

Couldn't agree more! Great write up. Anyone who thinks MoS deserves 56% is out of their mind. Sure, it isn't the best CBM ever, but it's a pretty good attempt at one. Same with Iron Man 3, we can't ask for demand perfection and then complain when we just get great.

I'd love to get into contact with a Rep. at Marvel, ask him to make a flop of a film, then see how the trolls react. They'd probably call it the greatest master piece since 'Kramer vs Kramer' or 'Le Mans'.

Y'know, I really dislike Avatar. It got really good scores and BO intake, but I hated it. Didn't feel original, and even if it was original, I hated the story. But it got an Oscar nomination or two. But I don't care.

It attracts DC fans because Marvel TROLLS(Not fans) seem to use RT as if it is their internet life-support.

here is what i think, what makes a succesful movie? or what makes a movie more succesful than the other one? well i think is who you please.
a succesful movie please the fans (love by fans)
please the critics (critics like it)
and has made their money back.
Avatar? Tranformers? no they failed in at least one.
avengers, lord of the rings, the dark knight, toy story are all truley without no doubt succesful. i do think F the critics and money yes, but they are part of a succesful movie IMO. and thats how we get this as quoted
"Now, yes it does matter to a certain degree. If a film doesn't make enough, it won’t get a sequel, and if it gets reviewed very well, it might garner some awards, which is good. I want my favorite films to get nominations and sequels." grat freking article, brav0
