EDITORIAL: Marvel's Phase 3 Films

So what movies should we see from Marvel and what do I think we will get? Well, let's start with the most obvious one, that was confirmed a long time ago:

Ant-Man (July 2015) - The film will serve as the very first post-Avengers movie of Phase 3. I think it'd be cool to see some of the aftermath on the MCU from the perspective of someone who wasn't in either of The Avengers films. I mean, the only movies we got from Phase 3 featuring characters on Earth, are all involved in the first film and had been in it. This will be the first opportunity to see what normal people think of the world they've been born into and live in now.

Advantages:
-It is the first film after the assured powerhouse that is Avengers: Age of Ultron
-It has a great cast attached to it with Paul Rudd and other huge actors

Disadvantages:
-Doesn't directly feature any characters from either Avengers film, hindering its connection with audiences
-Features a character most audiences would consider lame or unknown
(Estimated: $500 million)

Captain America 3 (May 2016) - The film will serve as the first Avenger character to get his solo film outing. We'll definitely want to get back to seeing some of these characters we've come to love back on screen. I'd think it'd be cool to see the reconstruction of a new S.H.I.E.L.D. under the head of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. It'd be cool to see RDJ come back also to further the relationship of the two characters.

Advantages:
-It is the first Avenger-centric solo film to be released
-Captain America has huge exposure and after the reception of Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be brilliant
-Has the highly coveted May slot for CBMs

Disadvantages:
-If it really does open against Batman vs. Superman, it isn't a big enough property to win
(Estimated: $800 million)

Thor 3 (July 2016) - The film will show the first procedure of events with Loki back as the main villain following Thor: The Dark World. It'll likely see Thor have to battle for the soul of Asgard back from Loki, posing as Odin. We'll likely also see Jane Foster again.

Advantages:
-July is a pretty great time for release especially for an Avenger film
-Thor has recognition worldwide because of his place in both Avengers films
-Natalie Portman is one of the biggest female names in the business

Disadvantages:
-Thor: The Dark World has the worst reception of any released MCU film so far
(Estimated: $700 million)

Iron Man 4 (May 2017) - In the link below, we see that Marvel surveyed fans over what marketing they should use for all confirmed Phase 3 films...except Iron Man 4, not previously confirmed. I think, should we see another Iron Man film, we'll probably see a reintroduction of the terrorist group of the Ten Rings with the REAL Mandarin, following the one-shot "All Hail the King".

Advantages:
-It's Iron Man, the most powerful force Marvel has made of its second-tier characters
-RDJ is sure to bring audiences back
-It has the coveted first week of May again

Disadvantages:
-RDJ's contract explicitly makes him return for Avengers films, not Iron Man which would require more negotiation
(Estimated: $1.5 billion)

Doctor Strange (???? 2017) - This is a property that Marvel has been looking at developing for quite some time and would likely come to fruition around this time. It'll likely have been built up to for quite a while, getting people hyped for it.

Advantages:
-Rumors of Johnny Depp taking the role would lend star crecidence but, regardless, we can count on big stars to carry this film much like Ant-Man
-Hyped for quite a well so it'll have big pay-off

Disadvantages:
-Obscure property with a premise that might turn a lot of people off
(Estimated: $500 million)

Black Widow (???? 2018) - A lot of people think that we'll get Avengers 3 this year but I sincerily doubt it. Sony has slotted a, as-of-yet untitled, Spider-Man project for the first week of May in 2018. This leads me to believe, they'll take a chance to develop more solo films in their universe and no one better than a character who hasn't gotten their own franchise and has a charismatic lead to carry the film.

Advantages:
-Charismatic lead that people would come out to see
-Would come out right before an Avengers film

Disadvantages:
-Female-led superhero films tend not to do as well as male-led ones
(Estimated: $600 million)

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (???? 2018) - We know Guardians of the Galaxy connects with Avengers 3 and it'd be a great idea to try to do this film RIGHT before the last Avengers film in the trilogy as it does connect with the massive event film that will Avengers 3 and will add to the film's popularity.

Advantages:
-A team-up movie that holds precedence and has been introduced
-Chris Pratt seems to be a TV star about to blow up

Disadvantages:
-Still a goofy concept that might not hit off with audiences
(Estimated: $750 million)

Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet (May 2019) - The film would culminate all the phases to have the big bad, Thanos, arrive to Earth to fight the Avengers personally.

Advantages:
-A proven ensemble with a remarkably good cast
-Lots of hype and build-up to the final film in the franchise

Disadvantages:
-N/A
(Estimated: $2 billion)

There will eventually be a 4th Iron Man, but I don't see it happening this soon, and I definitely don't see it including the "real" Mandarin.

A lot of the indications seem to be that Dr. Strange will be the other film in 2016, not Thor. I really didn't like TDW, so the next Thor needs to be much better, although it wouldn't bother me to only include him in Avengers movies.

I for one would love to see a Black Widow movie. But, if they do one, I think it won't be until they start making 3 a year, with Black Widow being the third, smaller film. And your box office estimate is ridiculously optimistic. It might make $300-400 million, which would be a pretty big success for a female character with no powers. But, I think it's much more likely that a Capt. Marvel film will be the first Marvel film with a female lead.

Whether or not GotG gets a sequel will depend entirely on how well the first one does, so we'll have to wait and see on that.

I think the third Avengers film will come out in 2018, not 2019. I just don't see them waiting that long between them. If they don't want to go against Spiderman, they'll just have it be in June or July. And I know everyone think it's guaranteed to be the Infinity Gauntlet. I'm not so sure. Marvel doesn't always do what's expected, and the Infinity Gauntlet could wait for a 4th Avengers film, or could instead be a part of a GotG film, with maybe a few Avengers joining in.

Also, depending on how well GotG and Ant-Man do, they could introduce another new character, Black Panther or as I've already mentioned, Capt. Marvel. A Hulk movie is also a possibility.

Pretty well thought out. As to Black Widow I think it would do well especially if we get the relationship with The Winter Soldier. There is just so much good material.

As to Captain America 3. If it's story is as good as Captain America 2. Also in Cap's favor Marvel movies have been more 'family friendly.' which means a larger audience to pull from. And if WB executives get more involved as they have in the recent past with other DC properties. Than Batman vs Superman will fly high Thursday night, Maybe Friday. But it will crash and burn soon after. But if we get A Worlds Finest. Well nice knowing ya Cap. But I have not seen anything yet on Batman vs Superman that puts my fears to rest. So lets see.

Could be ill....

Black Widow though, i don't see happening. While the idea is getting thrown around right now cuz of TWS (Just like last year with the hulk in Avengers), I happen to think the first rule solo female movie from Marvel is going to be (and should be) Captain Marvel...aka Carol Danvers.

I think a good way to save the Thor franchise would be a mini Avengers movie, sort of like how cap 2 had multiple characters... Thor should team up with the Warriors 3... This is a great idea and great fan service in my opinion. That's 4 v. 4 if they use enchantress, loki, surtur, and that other dude who usually teams with enchantress, the after credits should involve thanos beating the ever-loving Shit out of loki for having "failed him" (Avengers 1)I mean make this movie 2 and a half hours and this could be the perfect Thor movie... Kill Jane her character is pointless (kill Jane in Avengers 3)(i would have words with thee would be used after this) Awwww this is gold! I should help them write their movies... A Thor movie if done right should be an amazing fantasy adventure nearing on hobbit/Lord of the Rings film length.

Save Thor marvel!

I thought the same thing about Cap 3 before watching Wonter Soldier but now that I've seen it I think it's good competition for Batman VS Superman. I mean let's face it and say that BvS will probably make more due to the idea and characters behind it but I'm just as excited for Cap 3 and hope it makes over a billion dollars.

Damn...i spaced beta-ray! I'm ashamed... Yeah! Must find a way to include him Fo shizzle.. Ah, and I bet balder can fit in as well.. I mean Thor definitely has enough stories to make 4 films easy!

This is a highly subjective topic that isn't thoroughly explained well. Barely discussing anything else that could explain the pros and cons further

I have a hard time believing they would use a Black Widow movie. I can see a Hulk 2 before a solo Widow movie.

Thor should team up with the Warriors 3? Ummmm.......hasn't he already pretty much done that in both of his films so far?
