Hello and I'm The Comic Critic,

Musical's seemed to be a thing of the past until they started making a huge come back in this day and age. With the popular inclusions of the Glee franchise also just to mention High School Musical more and more teens are growing on to the trend. I bet all of us can relate to that one song we have in our mind all the time when we walk down the street or when we kick open a door to a new world. I'm here today to discuss music in comic book films and what place they should be in now in our decade.

Not so often in superhero films today you would see our hero breaking into a song or a dance where instead most of the focus goes into action or the development of the story. I think we all remember in 2007 in the film
Spider-Man 3 the memorable dancing Peter Parker scene. Even though the film went a little over the top it was still one of the best sequences in the movie I remember.

Also just to note in the 1994 film The Mask based on the character from Dark Horse Comics there was another memorable sequence featuring a dance number too.

I know these films I just listed were a mix of both action and comedy, but don't all comic book films have a balance of that in place. Recently in Captain America:The First Avenger we had the Star Spangled Man original song for the film also to mention the montage scene with it. I'm not just talking about putting more music in films I'm talking about the heroes breaking out into a song and dance in the middle of the film. How about if in The Dark Knight Rises we had Batman suddenly sing on a rooftop about how Gotham city is a dark and violent place and how he has to defend it each night. It could be sung to a gloomy tune, we know Batman does not really sing ever but it would be nice for it to happen at some point to balance out the action. It does not have to be over the top, but a little edgy and radical.

How about if in The Avengers all the Shield agents on the Helicarrier suddenly broke out into a huge musical number. It would be like an extravaganza of dancing, lights, and talent put in place. Here I wrote a song that would describe the scene of what they would sing about.

The Shield Agents Musical Number:

"We are The Agents of Shield,We are The Defenders of Justice,We are The Champions of Time,We will not Back Down,Because We have Job To Do"

-cue dance sequence-(Shield Agents doing backflips of computers, break dancing, flying off walls, thriller style moves)

"Oh we work for Nick Fury,He is our Supreme Leader,Oh we are The Agents of Shield,We DEFEND JUSTICE AND PEACE"

-the shield logo descends from ceiling like a disco ball-
-agents dancing around the logo-
-ending-(strike a hero style pose)

People this may seem like a crazy idea but its a major assembly of talent and hard work. It will appeal to people of this generation to keep in mind, more and more people would be looking up to comics and such. We need to keep musical numbers alive not just in their own films but other genres such as comic book films. It would encourage more creativity to the projects or the story being told. Music can relate to anything if the lyrics match the theme of what is being told.

Captain America: The First Avengers is one of my highest regarded films. The whole WWII-propaganda gave this nostalgic stylistic vibe I just adore seeing in films. "Star Spangled Man" musical number felt natural with the film (plus it was well directed and choreographed). However... I don't think it's right for every comic book film adaptation — I really don't know which story would allow for such without it feeling forced (e.g. Spider-Man 3, ugh). Honestly don't think we'll see another, or at least another musical number that isn't cringeworthy.

Yeah, I can really imagine the Justice League breaking out into Journey's Don't stop Believing, I'd also love to hear The Avengers do a cover of Mamma Mia.

In short: YES. If it has purpose. But besides Captain America: The First Avenger — when does it ever have purpose? I can imagine Joss Whedon writing a daydream sequence with one of the Avengers — strutting their stuff in New York City (with a self-important attitude)... :P

It worked in Capatian America because it was parodying the ridiculous situation he was in.
It did NOT work in Spider-man 3. ^^

No musical numbers please.

Everyone gives Raimi crap for that quirky dance Peter does... but it's so obvious it is only in the movie to be funny.

So yeah, your article - no. I love musicals, I really do. If you were to make an article calling for theatrical musicals of superheroes, I'd say "awesome". But it doesn't belong in these kinds of movies - it mixes the theme up, and interrupts the entire flow and captivity the movie would have otherwise have accomplished over the course of the film. Counter-productive.

I'm 99% sure this is a joke.
That being said, Avril Levigne as Felicia Hardy.
