What happens now for S.H.I.E.L.D. and the MCU as a whole?

What does Marvel Studios have up their sleeve?

First of all, I'd like to mention that this article does contain spoilers. So if you haven't seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, come back after you've experienced the greatness for yourself.  But, for those of us who have seen it, let's indulge in some good old fashioned speculation.
Also, this is my first article, so take it easy on me guys.

*SPOILERS* Below-

As we all know, S.H.I.E.L.D. was pretty much disbanded after the events of The Winter Soldier. It was revealed the HYDRA was not actually defeated after Steve took out the Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger. Rather, HYDRA lived on within S.H.I.E.L.D. under the control of Alexander Pierce. It would seem that when one head is severed, two more really do take its place. So the question is, what happens now? Is this it for our favorite homeland security department? Well, perhaps not.

As of now, it is unknown where the Avengers will assemble from here on out since the Triskelion (S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ) is no longer an option. A common theory is that Stark Tower, which pretty much became The Avengers Tower/Mansion at the end of The Avengers, will serve as the new hub for the team in Age of Ultron. And while that solves the housing issue, there is still one very important issue left: Who will direct the team? I don't mean lead, as that's obviously Cap's job. I want to know who's going to give Cap orders now since Nick Fury is off the grid. I want to know who's responsible for all the political business and what not. The team needs a director, and SHIELD needs to be reinstated. But by who?

My bet is that it will be Tony Stark. Maybe not immediately, but eventually. I believe that Tony will work with Agent Maria Hill (who was shown getting a job at Stark Industries at the end of The Winter Soldier), and Agent Coulson to reestablish SHIELD. In the comics, Maria Hill becomes director, but later gives the job to Tony. So perhaps she'll be director for a while until she decides to step down. When will she step down, you ask? Well, when Robert Downey Jr is too old to be Iron Man, of course. This way Marvel won't have to write/kill Tony off, and thus he'll be able to remain in the MCU for years to come. Everybody wins, no?

There is another theory going around that Steve Rogers will become the director, and that Bucky will take up the role of Captain America. Lets consider this. Cap's STRIKE outfit in the Winter Soldier did strongly resemble his director of S.H.I.E.L.D. outfit from the comics. And he is, in the words of Nick Fury, "giving the orders now." But know that Chris Evans recently stated that he wants to take a break from acting after his contract is fulfilled. And let’s face it, that's about to happen in a few years. So unless S.H.I.E.L.D. is up and running again by the end of Age of Ultron, it's very unlikely. On the other hand, Bucky becoming Cap is very likely. Sebastian Stan (Bucky) is signed on for nine films. That's quite a few more than Chris has left to do. So my bet is that Marvel will go with the "New Captain America/Death of Captain America" story arc in which Bucky replaces Steve as the plot of Captain America 3. I mean, Bucky did learn about himself during the second credits scene of the Winter Soldier, so it's unlikely that he will be an antagonist.

The more I talk about this, the more excited I get. What about you guys?
Sound off in the comments!

*sigh* more of this fanboy nonsense about killing off Steve Rogers and replacing him with Bucky because that's what they do in the comics. *sigh*

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and oh, btw, NO! to killing off Rogers. It's a dumb idea, it will turn off general audiences and kids, and it should not happen. Fortunately, I think Marvel is smart enough to realize that. Evans signed a 6 movie deal, which means he has AoU, Cap 3, and Avengers 3 left (no, TDW did NOT count. Feige is on record as saying that was just something Evans did as a favor.) So, considering how much TWS is raking in, there's no way they kill off Rogers before that. And while Evans said he might want to take a break, that could easily be handled by just putting a few years between Avengers 3 and whatever Cap would be in next. RDJ signed a 2nd deal, there is no reason why Evans can't do the same if enough money is offered. And whenever Evans does quit, either reboot or pull a James Bond and just replace him. And if Marvel does decide to tie up his story, don't kill him off. Let him retire, get married and go have kids. That would match Steve Rogers' personality, and is a lot better than killing him.

As for this other stuff, have Maria Hill become director of some kind of new Shield. Not Stark, he has other things to do. And when RDJ gets too old, Feige has already said that he sees Iron Man as being like Bond, and will just find a new Tony Stark.

Bucky taking up the Cap role in the comics isn't the only reason people think it might happen in the films.

There are actually things happening aside from that that could lend to people thinking it might happen. The post credits scene showing Bucky discovering who he really is would be a good start to him coming over to the good guys side. Also, like its been mentioned 100 times. Sebastian Stan is signed on for WAY more movies than most people in the MCU.

Lets think about that. Marvel obviously offered him that many films for a reason. They may not know for sure that it is what they want to do, but its clearly on their radar as something they might want to do in the future. He would require that many films on his contract because his story takes a lot to explain, and having him take up the Cap role would be some time in the making. But again, they clearly offered him that many films for a reason and its not so he can show up in 9 Captain America films.

So yeah, people are justified in thinking its something they might do. And not simply "because it happened in the comics".

thats a LOT of wishful thinking...

I would think so. Maybe not as main characters or anything, but I think they'll be around, or mentioned. Assuming SHIELD is fixed by then.

All I've really wanted out of Agents of SHIELD is for them to do a 2 part episode that focuses on The Punisher and SHIELD trying to bring him in.

They will kill steve the same way they killed batman in the Dark Knight. I would wager what's going to happen is he'll be "assassinated" they will reveal it was Sharon Carter, Bucky will take up the mantle of Cap and at the End we will find Steve Rogers alive in a Hydra prison.

"They will kill steve the same way they killed batman in the Dark Knight."

lol. Did we watch the same movie? I missed the part in the Dark Knight when Batman was assassinated by the love of his life. In the version I saw, he faked his death in a nuclear explosion, then went and lived a life of luxury with the girl that betrayed him and led him to his greatest enemy, only to have his back broken by said enemy.

(just saying that sounds ridiculous. "faked his death in a nuclear explosion." lol)

I love how comic fans share the general audience won't get it, it's to much for them, it will turn them off etc etc. Marvel is going to tell the story they want, regardless. To say with ANY emphasis what they will or won't do is just plain sill.

People really get in their feelings when talking about killing characters off huh?Lol! I love Steve/Cap as much as the next person and think Chris is definitively Cap, but we will see Bucky eventually take that mantle. They even teased it a bit in TWS when Bucky took his shield while they were fighting, which was awesome. Now its not to say they will actually kill Steve, but Chris has made it clear after Avengers 3 when his contract is done, his focus is going to directing. He clearly wants a break. I believe they're setting up Sebastian Stan in the best way to take the role and he does have that 9 pic deal. It's just all too logical for it not to happen eventually. Not sure what they're thinking for Cap 3, but it will be another game changer for sure and Avengers 3 even more so. I feel Cap 3 will focus on Bucky finding who he really is and of course reconciling with Steve and them fighting together again. Avengers 3 I think will have Cap and Bucky as well with Bucky on the team. Something will happen with Steve, leaving Bucky to become Cap. The audience will be well adjusted and used of seeing him by then so it would be a great transition.

"Chris Evans recently stated that he wants to take a break from acting after his contract is fulfilled."

Is it possible for people to stop spreading this? He later did an interview about how his comments were blown up. It was even reported on this very site!

He did some directing, and wants to do more. He made it clear he is not going to stop acting. And it's not in any way out of the question that he could sign on for another movie or two, like Downey did. Contracts can be renegotiated, and after TWS making the box office it is, there's absolutely no way Marvel won't try to do so with Evans. He's the first star to make RDJ money other than RDJ, of course.

"Marvel obviously offered him that many films for a reason."

They also tried to get Evans to sign on for 9 initially. If you want to believe they have plans for 9 films with Stan, you also have to think Evans was part of those plans in the beginning.

I don't believe it though. They probably sign these actors on for as many films as the actor will agree to. I know they say "we have it mapped out 'til 2028" or whatever, but there's absolutely no way that mapping isn't just a vague plan.

Also, all the pieces for Cap's death are totally there, they set the table. Sharon Carter, Crossbones, Strucker, etc etc. BUT...Cap 2 made a ton of money. It's reasonable to expect that any plans they did have, assuming it's true, for a Death of Cap plot in Cap 3 is going to get shelved in lieu of something closer to TWS, and thus getting more of that type of box office.

@Destined
"They even teased it a bit in TWS when Bucky took his shield while they were fighting, which was awesome."

I know a lot of fans are taking that moment the same way. It could also be yet another one of those nuggets they toss out in the vein of "we aren't going to follow the comics exactly, so you won't really get to see that plot. BUT, here's a hint at it just to whet your appetite."
