Why Can't DC Characters Get A Good Film Off The Ground? Warner Bros.

Why Can't DC Characters Get A Good Film Off The Ground? Warner Bros.

Read on to find out why I believe that even though DC has some of the best characters in comics history, they are under performing at the box office, and ruining any chances at ongoing sequels

I think besides Batman (1989) and the Donnor Superman films, DC has consistently failed in Hollywood for reasons that are out of the hands of DC. Warner bros. has a track record of doing all they can to make a buck. I for one would love nothing more than to see DC succeed as Marvel has, but with no respect for the source material, WB is constantly kicking fans in the face.

Let's begin with the example of BATMAN FOREVER. I imagine Warner Bros. said let's sell toys and merchandise, who cares about respectable cinema? Only kids will watch this crap anyway, and if they have cool toys the movie will sell.

I had been hoping for a good vision of Batman, and Nolan came close, but let's face it, he did not utilize the Batman character as much as build up a supporting cast around Batman. Christian Bale was a magnificent Bruce Wayne but a terrible Batman, whereas Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Tom Hardy, and Aaron Eckhart gave stellar performances as their respectable characters.

Now to Green Lantern, I will not take the easy way out and blame it all on Ryan Reynolds, although his terrible portrayal of Hal Jordan was laughable. The true flaw was in the very hokey script. In the 70's Green Lantern was a hard hitting comic book with very real social commentary, and the film had none of that. They shot for a fun popcorn summer blockbuster and failed miserably at even delivering that.

As for Superman Returns I believe again Warner Bros. were standing on Bryan Singers toes the whole time. Singer is a respectable film maker but was unable to meld his vision with what fans wanted to see. And frankly, they shouldn't have connected it to the Donner films, but just done a reboot.

I love DC and all of their characters and I pray for salvation in the hope of Man of Steel being awesome. However, if it is not a decent attempt at reviving the franchise, I believe it will be the nail in the coffin for any DC film that is not Vertigo based.

I agree but it was Singer's idea for the sequel to Superman 2.

Yep Singer was given complete artistic freedom on Superman returns.

If that's the case and the kid was his idea as well then I have lost a lot of respect for Mr. Singer. The next thing I write will be better I promise I was unaware until today that anyone could throw something on here. More research and more time and I'll deliver something good probably on why we need a new Spawn movie. Thank you for your input and patience.

Happy Birthday Hush2010.

This is kind of a false to a point. You bring up the past flaws of WB without noticing the current successes and improvement to their films. HP, The DK Trilogy, Man of Steel, and future successes.

@JokerFan

Let's be honest, that movie had Nolan's name stamped on it. If anything it will get a boost from simply that. Not to mention, it's the first Superman film not connected to the Donner films and had an amazing trailer. Plus, it's one of the world's most well known characters. It's pretty much assured to be a success.

Also, if people can post crap on this site talking about video games and movies that aren't CBMs, I am pretty sure I can make mention that WB has upped their game and make mention of a series of films inspired by a book of fiction. Suck it.

DC has also stepped up their game with the New 52. Characters that were once pretty lame in either the hero area or villain roster have severely improved. Aquaman and Flash for example. Aquaman is now one of the more popular titles and is being respected rather than laughed at. Flash's villains have been amped up to where they actually have a threat level that makes sense up against the fastest man alive. (i.e. Captain Cold now generates a super cold aura that slows flash if he gets too close, and Grodd taps into the speed force)

DC and WB have both stepped up their games the last few years and I highly doubt we will see any disastrous movies in the near future. Doesn't mean it won't happen, but I doubt it.

You forgot WATCHMEN...

One of the best cbm's ever made... was not for kids, may not have been a huge success but damn, a totally amazing mind blowing film and mae up 4 it in dvd and blu-ray sales.

^ This could've took WB back years and thinking time to do kiddie DC movies again, shame...

MARVEL movies have had total shitters too, maybe not Marvel Studios but its still Marvels fault we got crappy ass Fox ones etc.

RED a DC movie might not be WB but a huge success with a sequel coming out!

WB always been top of the game on all their live-action series.. toons, animated movies beating Marvel, though Marvel now with Disney are starting to care for live action series thank god, in the past practically nothing and didn't.

I, like you can see DC bringing out the gold again at the Box Office, [frick] they've been sitting on gold for many years and it takes Avengers to kick 'em up the ass an take notice... JUSTICE LEAGUE will blow everything away, biggest superheroes ever and worldwide known by Joe public, even grandmothers know a lot of these characters!

AVENGERS was the best movie by far last year and we can all see why, hell, so far the best cbm this decade!

Nice read and I hope they do a sequel to Green Lantern, just take it more seriously and much more space epic and no hovering space clouds like in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer! :P

P.S. Tattoo's... ^5

You seem to make some fair points, but a lot of this info is wrong too. For one thing, WB haven't 'consistently failed at the box office' with their DC properties - the box office means ticket sales and profits - Batman Begins made a decent profit, Superman Returns made a small profit too (although not enough to get a sequel), The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises are two of WB's most profitable movies and were huge box office successes. Green Lantern just about broke even, as did The Losers, and the only film to make a loss (and a big one at that) was Jonah Hex.

Talking from a critical point of view, only The Dark Knight Trilogy have been almost universally praised by critics and audiences (I still think Rises isn't very good, but most other people seemed to like it). Superman Returns recieved mixed reviews. Green Lantern, The Losers, and Jonah Hex were critically panned.

Also, as LEEE777 already said, you forgot about Watchmen, which did well critically and made a small profit, and RED (not a WB film, but it's a DC adaptation) which did pretty well critically and made quite a big profit, and is getting a sequel.

And Bryan Singer purposely made Superman Returns a sequel to Superman II - it was his choice, not the studio's. WB had planned to reboot with Superman: Flyby (to be directed by McG and star Henry Cavill), until McG walked out. They hired Bryan Singer to replace him, and he decided to make the film a sequel to Superman II instead of a reboot, and he replaced Cavill with Brandon Routh because Routh looked like Christopher Reeve.

So it's not that they consistently fail, it's that they're very hit and miss, and they obviously find it easier nowadays to use Batman, and to an extent Superman, over their other characters.

Having kind of defended them there, I still have no faith in Justice League. They're clearly rushing it to capitalize on Avengers, they were bragging about the script being written by the guy who wrote Gangster Squad and that movie was shit, and the only person who's actually praised the script so far is Mark Miller, and in terms of his film knowledge he tends to like everything unless he knows that everyone else hates it.

Did we forget all the movies based on Marvel characters that were bad till someone did Blade? It took about a good decade before a movie on a Marvel character was good. There are still duds out there being made.

WB has made some good ones and bad ones too. Watchmen is a great movie on a cb character. I also liked V for Vendetta. They made 4 bad DC films outside of Bats & Supes(Steel, Catwoman, Green Lantern, Jonah Hex).

WB will make good cb movies and make bad ones in the future. They would do better if they would just let DC do it on their own.

@IronMan13

Definitely YOPO because seriously Marvel has better comics than DC is crazy talk. haha. Marvel has a couple titles that don't suck right now and a lot of their comics are the same thing with a different name it would seem haha. Uncanny Avengers, Avengers Assemble, New Avengers, Avengers, Superior Spider-Man, Avenging Spider-Man, Deadpool, Deadpool killistrated, the list goes on. DC has many titles doing well. Each has their own story and feel, but come together in the Justice League which will soon get an expansion with a different group called Justice League of America with completely different heroes. These titles include Aquaman, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern (granted there are several GL titles but they focus on different members and the GL corps has thousands of members), Justice League, Flash, Wonder Woman, Teen Titans, Red Hood, and more.

I say DC>Marvel in comics
DC>Marvel in movies
Marvel>DC in TV/Animation (Nowadays)
DC>Marvel (Past)
DC>Marvel in videogames
and Justice League> Avengers

@Levitikuz

All movies leading up to Avengers were basically build up titles that needed to get out in time before Avengers and in my opinion lessened the overall quality. They were good but could have been much better. Avengers was a lot of explosions and jokes. Yeah it was a good film, but after that much build up I guess it would have been cooler to see better story writing IMO. People are saying Justice league will suck because it's being rushed. I say Just run the JL movie then do the character origins later when you have time to give them justice. Very much like what they did in the comics.

@Rhino4508 If you're saying uncanny avengers and new avengers suck then clearly you don't get the sub-text for it. DC has a few good titles but marvel are doing much better creatively IMO.
Good DC titles
Batman
Aquaman
Green Lantern
Batgirl
Animal Man
Swamp Thing
Justice league
Action Comics

Apart from those DC have been screwing up they're continuity badly, when they explain to me how things like knightfall, Batman R.I.P. blackest night and green lantern rebirth happend but the death of superman didn't and tim drake was never robin, then ill throw them a bone for they're continuity issues. But even without the continuity issues they have completely shit on characters like superman, green arrow and Wonder Woman to the point of alienating they're fans and the sales are in the toilet.

While marvel do have they're shit like thunderbolts and cable and the x-force, they've been actually swapping creative teams and giving young up an coming writers like remender and hickman big marvel books.
Good marvel titles

All New X-Men
Daredevil
Indestructible Hulk
Thor: God Of Thunder
Scarlet Spider
Venom
Ultimate Spider-Man
Wolverine And The X-Men
Fantastic Four
FF
Hawkeye

Also you say avenging spider-man is bad but it's actually well written and has some themes in there I.e. doc ock slating Parker slating Parker for always helping people , then going to his old base and realising he hasn't achieved anything over the years and that Peter was a young man who helped people and had a life where people cared about and loved him, and ock realises that he was just an old man who's only victory was swapping minds with Peter.

@Spiderguy

Where did I mention Avenging or Uncanny Avengers suck? I merely stated almost all marvel titles are about the exact same group with the same names just tweaked a little. As for me, I don't care for the new Venom series, Ultimate Spider-Man, Scarlet Spider, FF, Fantastic Four, or Indestructible Hulk. Hawkeye I haven't really heard anything about, Thor I have heard good things about, Wolverine and the X-Men disinterests me because of the TV show and the fact that All New and Uncanny (which is coming up this month) interest me much more. Daredevil I haven't picked up in Years. Loved Classic devil, but didn't care for new age. Also, one that doesn't entirely suck for Marvel is Superior Spider-Man. Issue 1 infuriated me... but issue 2 brought me back and got me interested in 3 if it continues with this and allows it to grow Peter as both a person and a superhero I think it could end up doing really well, but if it stays Ock: TOILET.

Now DC, has several others you failed to mention. Nightwing, Flash, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, and Superman are all popular titles as well. I have heard good things about Talon, Birds of Prey, and Suicide Squad. Though I have yet to read any of them because I am already buying so many titles as is.

What's with all the Marvel hate from Levi and Rhino? I don't get that...both companies have made amazing comics over the years, currently DC is doing a bit better than Marvel but that doesent change the fact that Marvel is putting out some great titles.

I think Watchmen is the only non-batman DC film that's been released in the last 15 years that wasn't garbage. WB needs to step up their game and start putting some real time and effort into making quality films, because people love those characters and we hate to see them disgraced like that.

@LEVITIKUZ actually, Marvel is a subsidiary of Disney just like DC is a subsidiary of WB. The differences are: 1) WB own the rights to almost all of DC's properties, while Disney only has the rights to about half of Marvel's, and 2) Marvel were smart enough to set up their own movie studio to focus on their movie properties, while WB don't seem to trust DC enough to set up their own studio (either that, or DC just aren't that smart).

Because Warner Bros are a bunch of idiots.
DC has the best superheros of all time and Warner treats them like shit. Some people don't like DC because they are unrelatable. I say that is the cool part about them. They are Gods among men, here to save the world. DC heroes have biblical and mythological references to them. That gives them character.

it's easier for marvel because they have their own film studio soley for marvel filsm whilst dc comics are adapted by warner brothers, who have other franchises outside the comicbook genre, this is why batman and superman will always predominantly be on the big screen

Christopher Nolan got it right even pro magazines say that Bale is a great Bruce Wayne & Batman.DC characters are very interesting when it comes to the movies it is best to consult with DC Comics writers and editors themselves & have visionary directors like Donner, Burton & Nolan.

It is time to stop saying DC characters aren't interesting because they are do not get it twisted because the way some of there films have been made.
