BOX OFFICE: Universal's R.I.P.D. On Track For $15M Or Less Opening Weekend

Universal released several successful films this year (such as Despicable Me 2 and Fast & Furious 6), but its big budget Dark Horse adaptation R.I.P.D. is currently tracking for a disastrous $15M opening weekend.

Many have predicted early on that Universal's Dark Horse comic book adaptation R.I.P.D., which stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, would be one of this year's box office failures. Despite the studio releasing several successful titles in 2013 (such as Fast & Furious 6 and Despicable Me 2), it appears that the supernatural thriller will indeed be a disappointment. According to The Wrap, the film is tracking for a $15M opening weekend, and could make even less than that. Especially for a $130M high profile movie, this is a very underwhelming number. Universal is also waiting until Wednesday and Thursday to show the movie to critics, which is an obvious sign of a lack of confidence. R.I.P.D. will face much competition this weekend, with new releases Turbo (also starring Reynolds), RED 2 and The Conjuring all set to debut. The adaptation is also on track to join After Earth, White House Down, The Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim as one of 2013's key box office disappointments.
