BOX OFFICE: Universal's R.I.P.D. On Track For $15M Or Less Opening Weekend

Universal released several successful films this year (such as Despicable Me 2 and Fast & Furious 6), but its big budget Dark Horse adaptation R.I.P.D. is currently tracking for a disastrous $15M opening weekend.

Many have predicted early on that Universal's Dark Horse comic book adaptation R.I.P.D., which stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, would be one of this year's box office failures. Despite the studio releasing several successful titles in 2013 (such as Fast & Furious 6 and Despicable Me 2), it appears that the supernatural thriller will indeed be a disappointment. According to The Wrap, the film is tracking for a $15M opening weekend, and could make even less than that. Especially for a $130M high profile movie, this is a very underwhelming number. Universal is also waiting until Wednesday and Thursday to show the movie to critics, which is an obvious sign of a lack of confidence. R.I.P.D. will face much competition this weekend, with new releases Turbo (also starring Reynolds), RED 2 and The Conjuring all set to debut. The adaptation is also on track to join After Earth, White House Down, The Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim as one of 2013's key box office disappointments.

This movie looks like the most bottom of the barrel, lowest common denominator piece of crap since Grown Ups. Which, of course means it'll have at least 4 sequels.

Not unexpected, but a shame. It actually looks like some dumb fun, like Men In Black. Ah well.

Serves them right for trying to reproduce another Men in Black with this less than popular comic adaptation.

Serves them right again for casting Ryan Reynolds.

There's a big story (I think in Variety) about Ryan Reynolds being the star of two flops this weekend (RIPD and Turbo). He's not done, he's burnt, take him out of the oven and toss him in the trash, feeding him to the dogs would be animal cruelty, pigs won't eat that boy, maggots turn up their noses in disgust, Deadpool himself is hiding in shame, Jimmy Hoffa is offering his spot under the golf course for free cuz he feels bad for Reynolds. Reynolds doesn't care about the characters he claims to know so much about, he's all about Ryan, and Ryan sucks pond scum. Take the money and please for the love of CBMs and all things film go the hell away you horrible no talent fool!

I will be watching the fantastic Pacific Rim this weekend along with Red 2. Turbo and R.I.P.D. looks dump to me. RIPD looks like a rip off of Men In Black.

Pacific Rim is the best film to see this weekend. The actors are great, The action is awesome.

No hate, just reality. I'll admit, I actually like him in those chick flick films he's made, sure he's limited to three or four facial expressions, but he can work in those kinds of films. For cbms, no, he's a death sentence and a fraud, imo.

At what point does Reynolds become recognized as the 1 dimensional actor he is? I used to be a big fan but enough Reynolds. His acting and film choice suited the 90's. Time to think about a career change.

Ryan Reynolds should stay away from cbms and films in general. The man has no talent.

GOOD. maybe with this new flop fox, warner, marvel studios, and the others finally get the message that "kiss of death" reynolds should never be allowed anywhere near a comic book movie ever again.
