With his obligations for Bridge Of Spies & The BFG complete, Steven Spielberg is now actively casting his next directorial venture - Ready Player One

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline) is currently in early talks to portray the lead villain in the highly anticipated film adaptation of the popular Ernest Cline sci-fi novel. THR doesn't specify the role he's up for, but it's almost definitely that of Nolan Sorrento, the evil head of Innovative Online Industries' Oology Division.

Mendelsohn has been offered the part, so if/when his deal closes, he'll join a cast that already features Olivia Cooke (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl), who is playing Samantha Evelyn Cook a.k.a. Art3mis. The film is still searching for an actor to play its main character Wade Owen Watts.

Mendelsohn is best known for his breakout role on Netflix's Bloodline and will be seen next in Lucasfilm's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He also co-starred alongside Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) last year in the well-received Mississippi Grind, starred alongside Ryan Gosling (The Big Short) in The Place Beyond The Pines, and also had a small role in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises as John Daggert.

Ready Player One logs into the OASIS on December 15, 2017

AMAZING BOOK! Read it late last year and loved it.

He would make a perfect Sorrento. Please get this guy. He's a severely underrated actor. He's great on Bloodline.

I heard great things about the book, but when I read it I thought it was terrible. It was just non-stop 80s references, with barely any plot to hold it together.

@Valdez

The book is kinda terrible (also a bit cringey with all the power nerd fantasy IMO), but a movie of it can be pretty cool. Ben Mendelsohn seems like a good fit for Sorrento.

You should all watch Starred Up. Mendelsohn's best performance up there with Bloodline.

Isn't this the actor who was rumored to be up for the villain role in Justice League Dark? Those rumors fell of the face of the planet I guess...
