BOX OFFICE: READY PLAYER ONE Eyeing A $45 Million+ Opening During Easter Weekend
Legendary director Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi adventure Ready Player One is looking to dominate the holiday weekend in a lousy month at the domestic box office. Hit the jump for more on this story...
Ready Player One is hoping to buck the trend in an underwhelming month at the North American box office. Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ernest Cline's hit novel is looking to land in the $45-$50 million range in its opening weekend.
The film might be helped by the fact that the big openings from the last two weeks, Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim Uprising, have pulled in pretty modest numbers so far. The upcoming four-day weekend could also boost the movie's earnings.
Variety is reporting that the movie is projected to earn a little less than initial projections, which had Ready Player One in the $45M-$55 million range. The film was made on an estimated budget of $175 million.
A generally positive critical response to the movie, including a certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a successful first screening at SXSW earlier this month, is bringing some buzz into opening weekend.
With preview screenings tonight, we'll get a better look at the movie's box office performance in the coming days.
