Godzilla was criticised by fans for not featuring enough kaiju action, and while Godzilla: King of the Monsters upped the ante in that respect, it did so at the expense of its story. While Godzilla vs. Kong was far from a masterpiece, it seemingly found the right balance of what moviegoers want from this MonsterVerse, ushering in a new era for the franchise in the process.
Apple TV+ is currently developing a TV series, and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is hard at work on a sequel to that movie. Shooting has actually just started, and while we still have no significant details to share quite yet, this apparent working title is very interesting.
The alleged clapboard from the movie's set simply features the word "Origins," leading to no doubt even more speculation about the filmmaker's plans for this story.
We've previously heard that Godzilla won't appear in this sequel and that, rather than being a rematch with King Kong, we'll be flung into the far future to spend time with the Son of Kong. That scenario would lend itself well to the "Origins" tag, though it's also possible we'll be heading back in time to learn more about the origins of Skull Island.
It's hard to say for sure at this early stage, but it doesn't appear as if a rematch for Godzilla and Kong is on the table just yet. While it's bound to happen one day, it makes sense for this franchise to expand before then, making an eventual face-off feel like a true big screen event.
We hope to have more to share with you soon, but for MonsterVerse fans, this is all very exciting. There are lots of directions these kaiju can be taken in (we're still waiting on Mecha-King Ghidorah), but given what a hit Kong: Skull Island was, shifting the spotlight to that character is absolutely no bad thing.
The untitled Godzilla vs. Kong sequel is currently set to be released on March 15, 2024.
