Peter Jackson has made quite a name for himself thanks to his impressive work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film franchises, but now the writer/director is looking to take us on his next epic new saga: Mortal Engines.

Adapted from the award-winning book series by Philip Reeve, Mortal Engines is set thousands of years in the future after civilization has been destroyed, forcing humans to roam the Earth in gigantic moving cities that battle each other for survival. That's just the backdrop though, as the film seemingly centers on two unlikely heroes that come together in an attempt to change the course of the future.

The first teaser trailer only gives us a glimpse into this fascinating/terrifying future and what breathtaking set pieces Jackson has created for us in the upcoming Mortal Engines.

Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.

Mortal Engines rolls into theaters December 14, 2018.

@ShogunOfSorrow - Right!? I know fantasy films aren't the in thing right now but how is there no film of Karl Franz of the empire taking on Archaon the everchosen of chaos!?

You could have a film of the 3 way battle for karak ever peaks between the dwarfs, skaven, and gobblins!

Hell why isn't their a friggin movie of the rise of Nagash!

And don't even start me on W40k...

@MrNegative - I want a W40k movie written by Dan Abnett and directed by Gareth Edwards in 15+ years from now. The film industry doesn't quite have the technology yet to make the movie W40k deserves, let alone one that could be made with enough financial viability for sequels.

@ShogunOfSorrow -
Burn the heretic. Kill the mutant. Purge the unclean. Yes, a 40k film my god would be incredible. Just seeing the human race conquer the galaxy over the period of a 5 part film series defeating the orks ,tau, eldar etc.

@TheIronDuck - dude you just gave me a mental boner! That would be epic and would be beautiful! Imagine what a simple walk through a ship would look like under their direction. Dan would be amazing to start with and possible become what feige is to the marvel films. I would also love to see an Aaron Dembski Bowden chaos space marines film.

@JohnGotDaJuice "It is the 41st millennium and there is only war!" The idea of seeing space orks with their scrap weapons fighting the sons of the emperor would pretty much have me wetting myself!

@JohnGotDaJuice - A 40k film would be great, but I feel fantasy would be more appealing. The forces of good/evil are more clearly defined (still blurry, mind you)
