PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND: Check Out The Trailer For Nicolas Cage's Supernatural Sc-Fi Samurai Western

That may seem like quite a genre mouthful, but there really is no better way to describe this insane-looking new film from director Sion Sono. See Nicolas Cage at his batshit best in the new trailer.

The first trailer for Prisoners of the Ghostland is now online, and it looks about as batshit crazy as you'd expect.

Nicolas Cage turned in a surprisingly soulful, subdued performance in the recent Pig, but here he seems to be back to his unhinged best as a man known as Hero (nice) who is released from prison on the condition that he rescues the Governor (Bill Moseley) of Samurai Town's granddaughter (Sofia Boutella), who's been taken to the mysterious Ghostland.

The catch? He's been strapped into a suit that will self-destruct in five days if he hasn't brought the girl back by that time.

Prisoners of Ghostland is the English-language debut of acclaimed Japanese filmmaker/provocateur Sion Sono (The Forest of Love, Tokyo Vampire Hotel), so it should be quite an experience... to say the least!

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.

Cage has described the film as "the wildest movie I've ever made," which really is saying something. Does Sono agree?

"That's a good question," he tells EW. "I'd rather leave that question up to the audience. However, I know that Nicolas Cage has done a lot of great works and some of the works are crazy as well. If audiences think that this is the wildest movie that he's ever made, the craziest movie that he's ever made, then I would be really really happy to hear that."

Prisoners of the Ghostland arrives in theaters and on demand on September 17

Since Pig was filmed after this, ideally his path to quieter roles continues cos he gives a masterclass in that. This looks incredible tho

@BlackBeltJones - Ohhhh. Something new for me! Sounds great. Are they comparable to the Park Chan-wook Vengeance trilogy?
Revenge movies are my absolute favourite and those are up there with the finest.

@Juggernaut2021 - they’re comparable somewhat in their gore and depiction of violence.

Where as the revenge trilogy is about said recent obviously, the Hate is about love and, appropriately enough, hate; And how they relate. He believes the emotions go hand in hand.

They’re a real treat man. I highly recommend.

Pig was great, I was expecting something totally different but ended up pleased throughout. Willy's Wonderland was garbage, can we get two good Cage movies in a row?!

I've yet to see Mandy (everyone says it's great), but I did see Colour Out of Space and it was great and this is from that studio, so I have faith in their absolutely bonkers Cage movies.

A bit OT: Saw Pig a couple of days ago and it was amazing!
