Denis Villeneuve Would Be Open To Helming A STAR WARS Movie... As Long As It Wasn't Part Of The Main Saga

Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve is right at the top of many Star Wars fans' wishlists to helm an instalment of the iconic franchise, & it turns out he is game... under the right circumstances.

Denis Villeneuve has made no secret of the fact that he's a massive sci-fi fan, and his love of the galaxy far, far away in particular has made him a big fan-favorite to one day helm a Star Wars movie.

Villeneuve has always skirted around the issue in the past, but in a new interview with Happy Sad Confused he provides a more positive response.

It turns out the Blade Runner 2049 director might be interested in boarding the franchise, but only if he could tell a story that took place in "a new part of the galaxy."

“It’s something that, again it’s like, I would be intrigued. I don’t know, it’s very difficult. What is dangerous with ‘Star Wars‘ right now is its become its own vocabulary. I would love to see them — I think ‘Rogue One‘ was a very interesting attempt to get out of the mold.” “I think it would be a great idea to get out of there and to go on a new part of the galaxy, that I would be open to."

We already know that Lucasfilm is planning to explore the galaxy beyond the main Skywalker saga and the accompanying standalone films with Rian Johnson's new trilogy, so this could turn out to be a match made in force-ghost heaven.

That said, just like Guillermo del Toro, Villeneuve has a lot of projects on the go (his reboot of Dune is believed to be next), so even if both parties were interested in working together we'd probably be waiting a long time to see the end result.
