We had heard reports that Carrie Fisher was in stable condition following her heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 23, but the news has just come in from various sources that she has unfortunately passed away.

Family spokesman Simon Halls released a statement on behalf of Fisher’s daughter and fellow Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress, Billie Lourd:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Fisher was, of course, best known for playing Princess Leia Organa in the original Star Wars trilogy and last year's The Force Awakens, but she also appeared in the likes of The Blues Brothers, The Man with One Red Shoe, Hannah and Her Sisters, and When Harry Met Sally.

Our thoughts go out to her friends and family at this time. Farewell, your highness, and may the force be with you.

Rest in Peace Carrie Fisher

I wonder what happens to her in Episode 8

And I wonder how they will handle this in Episode 9?

@SendMoreIdiots - No idea about the scripts but I see little few options: A) get her out of all scripts and not "showing up" AT ALL again (don't think they'll go with this option), B) keep her involvement to the minimum and using CGI, or C) using CGI and killing the character off....

@Starlight - who knows, her character might already have been killed off in Episode VIII. As sad as it is to say in hindsight.

I really don't get some people this women just died and her family is in mourning and all some of you think about is what's gonna happen in Star Wars now. Grow the hell up I understand she's an iconic character but think of something besides a damn movie. No one was wondering if Prince was gonna put out another album so why worry about this fictional characters fate.

@SendMoreIdiots - Episode 8 is in post-production, so maybe this will not cause any issues with the film. Episode 9 might have to go through some major re-writes.

@coronabeach21 - The reason most of us know who she is is because of Star Wars. So, our interest is in Star Wars. There is no reason to not discuss this. Why don't you grow the hell up and realize that none of us know here, so why should we be grieving other than the loss to the franchise?

@coronabeach21 - well to many this is what affects them directly. I see your point but to the people who didn't know her personally the character is as close to her as we have so what happens with the character IS personal to us
