Mark Hamill Sheds Some Light On His Improvised Moments In STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI
There have been a lot of discussion around Luke Skywalker's scenes in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Mark Hamill has revealed what moments he improvised that certainly made many fans happy...
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi featured plenty of scenes with Mark Hamill’s beloved Luke Skywalker. However, some of these moments have been a source of division among Star Wars and Luke Skywalker fans. But, while speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Mark Hamill himself has revealed some details on two moments that are arguably loved by both The Last Jedi’s critics and supporters alike, scenes which the actor himself influenced.
Both of these moments occur during the film’s final battle on Crait, and the first involves Luke’s final interaction with his sister Leia. Hamill explains to ET that the decision to give Carrie Fisher’s Leia a kiss on the forehead wasn’t a decision on his part, instead it was “spontaneous” and an act that “just happened.” Fortunately, as one would imagine, the cast and crew saw this moment and asked for a second take of this interaction between the siblings. While this scene was more than likely a heartfelt moment for fans, Hamill also revealed that, following the passing of Carrie Fisher, this became a scene he can’t watch.
Of course, such a heartfelt and personal moment was the only scene Hamill contributed to, as the actor reveals he also came up with the idea to have Luke acknowledge C3-PO:
“Initially, I didn't acknowledge Threepio, I walked right past him. I said, 'Rian, look it, after all those years of service, even though we haven't been in contact in recent years, Threepio was the closest to a sidekick I had. Harrison had Chewie and I had Artoo and Threepio, but [Rian's] so accommodating and so collaborative. He said, 'Oh, absolutely, you should go over there.' We didn't really have time to script anything, just to acknowledge him, and that's what I did.”
Seeing how well these brief moments worked in The Last Jedi, it’s hard for one to imagine their respective scenes without them. Thankfully, however, the Luke Skywalker actor improvised these moments, so we don’t have to imagine.
