After a disappointing opening at the box office,
Solo: A Star Wars Story isn't faring much better in its second weekend. According to Deadline, as of Saturday morning, the film is on track to earn an estimated $28.8 million, down 66% from its opening weekend.
Although the drop off at the box office was expected, and quite common for a No. 1 Memorial Day opening title, this is even grimmer
than analysts initially estimated. As the site points out,
"this is the lowest second weekend for a Star Wars movie out of Disney/Lucasfilm’s latest crop, and the 20th Century Fox released Episodes I-III."
Comparatively,
Rogue One; A Star Wars Story - the first of Disney's spinoff films - declined by 59% in its second weekend, but still amounted to $64 million.
Rogue One went on to gross $532 million by the end of its box office run. Should
Solo continue at this rate, it may struggle to even reach the $200 million mark, which is absolutely mind-boggling considering the franchise we're talking about.
So by Disney and
Star Wars comparisons,
Solo's performance at the box office isn't great. Still, it's No. 1 for the second straight weekend and on track for a two week domestic total of approximately $148 million. Should the film fail to crack $200 million at the domestic box office, it would have to be considered a major disappointment for the company which is already struggling to appease shareholders, despite the successes of
Black Panther and
Avengers: Infinity War.
Speaking of
Avengers: Infinity War, it's on track to earn another $10.6 million this weekend, which is almost half of what
Solo earned; so take that in for a moment. It now has a running domestic cume of $643 million.
Deadpool 2, meanwhile, is estimated to earn $23.5 million this weekend (No. 2) for a domestic total of $254.8 million.
