Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now in theaters, and although the latest installment in the Skywalker saga has been met with a somewhat mixed reaction from fans, one thing everyone seems to be able to agree on is how damn gorgeous it looks.

Now, thanks to the following images from the new The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi book, we get to see some of the early concept designs for several of the characters and locations.

Be warned, if you still haven't seen The Last Jedi, some SPOILERS are included.

Rainbow Porgs

These early designs for the adorable Porgs are basically the same as what we saw in the finished film, except that they're multicolored! It seems Johnson was offered several different options to choose from before settling on the more plain-looking brown and white.

Kylo Ren Prepares To Confront Luke

This stunning piece from James Clyne depicts the moment Kylo Ren disembarks his command shuttle on Crait to confront his old mentor, Luke Skywalker. The sun appears to be setting here, whereas the scene played out in broad daylight in the film.

Rey And Luke

Rey demonstrates her skill with a lightsaber to Luke Skywalker in this more cartoonish interpretation of one of the early scenes on Ahch-To from artist Karl Lindberg.

First Order Disguises

Here we see Finn, Rose, BB-8 and the duplicitous DJ ("don't join") making their way through a nest of First Order vipers in an attempt to sabotage the tracking system. The appears to be pretty much identical to what we saw in the finished film.

Snoke

Who was Supreme Leader Snoke? Why was he so strong with the force? How did he get those scars? Well, we still have no idea - but it looks like Johnson always had a pretty good idea of how he wanted the character to look.

Crystal Critters

These crystal foxes, or vulptexes to give them their proper name, are native to Crait and wind up showing our heroes the way out of the abandoned Resistance base when The First Order shows up. Again, their design didn't change very much from concept to screen.

The Cover

The cover of The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi from James Clyne features Rey on Ahch-To, with the Millennium Falcon visible in the background.

Bald Ben

Was Kylo Ren originally going to be bald when he was reintroduced in The Last Jedi? This artwork courtesy of Total Film certainly seems to suggest so. Perhaps Kylo was going to shave his head in disgrace after being defeated by Rey in The Force Awakens.

@Inktown03 - Years from now we'll be saying "Star Wars died with Luke Skywalker."

@Inktown03 - It was bad

One big issue I had for this is that the end didn't make me a bit excited for the next one

@Solarkalel85 - TFA asked so many intriguing questions, TLJ shat all over them and didn't ask any new ones.

@xAdam - yeah exactly.

@Solarkalel85 - You know the movie isn't good when the biggest question you're coming out of the cinema with is "What the [frick] was that? I hope I'm dreaming, this can't be real" and/or "How the [frick] are they going to deal with Leia?"

@xAdam - this is my biggest gripe with the movie, not even all the "bad characterization" people seem to be complaining about

@IctyoSapien - I was fine with the characterisation, I was fine with the length. Pretty much everything else, though, [frick] it.

@xAdam - my exact same thought, i wouldnt mind if they didnt tease the [frick] out of snoke a little bit but mainly Rey. Like its fine, Anakin was a nobody too, BUT WE KNEW IT RIGHT OF THE BAT! Setting up big old mysteries and giving "meh just [frick] it" answers to them in the sequel is not the best storytelling, in my opinion

@Solarkalel85 - to be honest, it WAS diffente and "fresh"

No one was expecting what we got. We were all "O MY GOD WHO'S SNOKE WHO'S REY FOLKS" and Johnson gave was a REAL world movie! and showed that it REALLY doesn't matter, Kylo just killed the f*cker and that's that.

Now, as for the future, I am also intrigued because I have NO IDEA what they could do now, it will be very interesting to see how J.J will close this.

overall, yeah, The Force Awakens was just better, but Last Jedi took some serious and bold shots, and I applaud it for it, even if the movie has some major flaws...
