For those that don’t know, the new Aliens vs Predator video game hit store shelves last month. Developed at Rebellion by the team responsible for the original 1999 classic, the all-new Aliens vs. Predator lets players take the role of the three infamous species; the Colonial Marine, the Predator and the Alien. Each of the three species has its very own distinct story-driven single-player campaign mode that interweaves with the campaigns of the other two species. Aliens vs. Predator also features unique 3-way online multiplayer, allowing gamers to pit the three species against each other in the ultimate battle for survival and for the right to be crowned the deadliest species.

We got a chance to have some of our questions answered by Tim Jones, the Project Lead over the latest installment to the three-species war that has become one of our favorite sci-fi universes to visit.

First off, I have to say that I'm a huge fan of the 1999 version of Aliens vs Predator. I couldn't have been more excited when I heard that there was not only going to be a new title, but that Rebellion, the team behind the version I loved so much, was going to helming the project.

Q: With the success of the first game, why return to the title over 10 years later?
A: It feels to us very much like Aliens vs Predator has come home. There’s a huge attachment in the studio both to the game franchise and the original films. We were very keen to step back into this universe, and add to it once again.

Q: As a fan of the games, as well as the different movie franchises, I was happy to hear that Lance Henriksen would be involved. Was it hard to get him onboard with the project, and what part does he play in the game?
A: Lance seems to love being in this universe just as much as we do. He plays Karl Bishop Weyland, a character that ties together the parts he played in Aliens, Alien 3 and AvP in ways we can’t go into without spoiling the plot of the game. It’s fair to say Lance liked the character, and the script we created for him, so he was very enthusiastic during the recording session.

Q: Aside from the respective movie properties, were there other films, games, or comics that inspired you while working on Aliens vs Predator?
A: We take inspiration from all the recent videogame classics, and from the Aliens vs Predator expanded universe. As for movies, we had more than enough to draw on given our roots in some of the most iconic movies ever made.

Q: What was the biggest challenge developing a game that would not only be available on PC, but also the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, which didn't exist back in 1999?
A: It’s a different and bigger marketplace out there. Games take longer to make and require bigger teams. Developing on multiple platforms means optimizing multiple times. It’s a question of size, in many ways, but there’s so much more we can do with the technology.

Q: What would you say are the key differences between the PC version and the console versions of the game? Does it come down to better graphics, or is there more to it than that?
A: Certainly high end PCs allow higher resolutions than console platforms. And there’s the higher likelihood of mouse control. Other than, we’ve tried to make it the same game for each platform, but at the same time optimized to each platform’s strengths.

Q: Without getting anyone angry, of the three platforms, is there one that you prefer?
A: We love them equally. Like a family of three children among whom there are no favourites.

Q: I'm currently running through the single-player campaign for the Marines, and was surprised when much of the action moved outdoors. Is there a specific reason that you stepped away from the claustrophobic interior environments?
A: The early levels certainly hark directly back to Alien and Aliens, movies based around dark, claustrophobic, metallic interiors. But we wanted to reference Predator, too, which takes place largely in jungle exteriors. We hope you enjoyed the progression, and variety.

Q: One of the biggest complaints I've heard from gamers is that the Predator is overpowered, are there any plans to modify balancing for multiplayer?
A: If anything, we’ve observed the Alien dominating early MP matches. However, we’ve responded to feedback from the community and are continuing to tweak the balancing with ongoing patches.

Q: Of the three species, Aliens, Predators, and Marines, which single-player campaign do you like the most? Which do you like for online play?
A: Our preferences vary around the team. Personally, I like how the Marine campaign has recaptured the tension and horror of Aliens – a movie that scared the pants off me when I first saw it. And when it comes to multiplayer I enjoy the versatility and nimbleness of the Alien. But that’s the great thing about our game. The choice is there. Enjoy one, or all.

Q: With the 1999 version of the game there were several unlockable bonus levels, jet packs for marines, and game modes ("supergore mode", "John Woo mode", etc). Do we have some cool bonus levels and items to look forward to with the new version of the game?
A: I think three species, three single player campaigns, and seven multiplayer modes over eight maps is a pretty good package to include on one disc. But DLC is inbound!

Q: Last, but not least, does Rebellion have anything planned for DLC (Downloadable Content), expansions, or maybe even a sequel?
A: The first DLC pack is out very soon. In terms of a sequel, who knows what the future may bring!

I'm still trying to finish it up (to write a review). I like the Marine and Predator campaigns so far... The multiplayer is fun, but it's got a nice little learning curve before you can compete with anyone. TONS of fun if you've got friends to play with :)

Very cool find Nate! :) I havent picked this up yet but I plan on doing so at some point! I'm playing Bioshock 2 right now - although it's a little too similar to the first one for my liking, it's still a great game!

I'm just looking forward to the Prison Break ganme coming out next week! I only heard about it a few days ago and yeah, I know it probably wont be too amazing, but it looks great!

Guys, check out my OLD MAN LOGAN Fan Cast!!! Just click the link!!!

this game sucks. well, i shouldn't say that, its nearly glitch free, the graphics are beautiful, and it has solid gameplay. BUT, its short as hell!!! i beat all 3 campaigns in a matter of 6 or 7 hours.

so then i jumped online to play, and NO ONE plays online apparently, because it takes about 5-10 minutes to find a game. THEN, when you DO get into a game, there are only 2 maps. you read that right, 2 MAPS! huh?? and there is nothing to unlock except for character skins that have no bearing whatsoever with the gameplay.

in this day and age, with other games like Modern Warfare 2, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (best game out right now) how in the name of BUDDHA can you create a multiplayer FPS game with only 2 maps, and no unlocks?? i guess thats why no one plays it online.

don't waste your money on this, go buy Battlefield: Bad Company 2 instead. you'll thank me for it.

@CorndogBurglar: I traded in AVP for Battlefield: Bad Company 2..The sh1t is good!!

really? i actually was dissapointed with bad company 2. i thought IT was too short. i finished it rather quickly and i didnt see that it had any extra unlockable missions ala modern warfare 2. am i missing something?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/18/2010, 12:42 PM
@ superdog

yeah man, you gotta play it online. Battlefield is and always has been centered around multiplayer. if you're into that, then you'll love it. :)
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/18/2010, 12:45 PM
@ keven

did you play the older AvP games for the PC?? those were far better than this. i think maybe thats a reason why i hate this one. the older ones were so much better.

by the way, i'm a HUGE Aliens and Pred fan, and yes this game has all the sounds and feel of their universe, but that only gets you so far. the replayability of this sucks very bad.

(and the pred only gets 4 weapons?? the staff, disk, mines, and shoulder cannon?? thats it? lame)

SHHH - 3/18/2010, 12:45 PM
@Keven: I did enjoy the Alien part well I loved the Alien part..I loved sneaking up on em..

Btw..Shutter Island is good.

CorndogBurglar - 3/18/2010, 12:49 PM
@ SHHHH

lol, thats what i traded it in for too. i REALLY wanted to like this game, and i guess i did, but once you beat the extremely easy and short campaign, there's nothing left to do. and multiplayer is non-existant...
superdog
superdog - 3/18/2010, 12:51 PM
corndog@ so you can only do special missions online for bad company?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/18/2010, 1:07 PM
@ superdog

they aren't special missions, when you play online, you play against a bunch of other people. (12 on each team)

there are 4 different game types. one is a single squad of 4 people, where its just squad vs. squad.

another is team deathmatch, where each team of 12 is broken into 3 squads, and the last squad alive wins.

Conquest, which makes you take over and hold strategic positions. the longer you hold the positions, the faster the other team loses points.

and you unlock guns and gadgets to make your character better. its a lot of fun if multiplayer is your cup of tea. which i love :)

sounds cool, but i wish it had unlockable extra missions like modern warfare. i played that game for months before i finally ran out of extra missions.

CorndogBurglar - 3/18/2010, 1:12 PM
@ superdog

yeah, i loved Modern Warfare, and played it all the way up until i got Battlefield. the spec ops in it were really fun, AND challenging! i just like battlefield's multiplayer better. i've been playing battlefield games on my PC for years though. maybe i'm jaded.

the game is a sleeper hit despite bad reviews and tough competition window which saw the realease of overrated uttrely average shooter Bioshock 2,NotAnotherMWclone BBC2..
this game is cool
sold 1.1 million copies on consoles alone in just 3 weeks :)

CorndogBurglar - 3/19/2010, 5:31 AM
@ bullsize

lol. considering that the Battlefield franchise has been around a LOT longer than the Call of Duty/Modern Warfare franchis, its pretty unfair to call Battlefield a Modern Warfare clone.

Battlefield is in its own league when it comes to first person shooters. no other FPS can compare to it. its beautiful.

but your right, bioshock 2 sucked dilk
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/19/2010, 5:35 AM
@ nubax

really?? are there more people playing it online now?? and are there more than 2 maps now?? i got AvP the day it came out, and the multiplayer was a joke. i LOVE playing games online, so i REALLY tried to like AvP's multiplayer, but it was just missing SO much.

like i said, 2 maps?? thats all we get?? also, it took a REALLY long time to find a match because almost no one was playing it. i traded it in for Bad Company 2, and i couldn't be happier!

@CorndogBurglar

multiplayer is like a fcukbuddy, hang out for a month then forget...Single player campaign is what a great game is remembered for.
for eg. Bioshock,Mass effect 1,2,Fallout 3,who can forget the awesome storyline of MW n MW2,Half Life and Half Life 2,Uncharted 2 and several Role playing games like ASc,Batman arkaham n POP,God of war series...

did we really need a mp in Bio2..they better had invested their whole energy n time into building a fresh sp...

I'll give u an example..MOH came before COD but we remeber COD more..y? just coz of great storyline and fantastic characters like Price n Soap isn,t it?
at this place BBC2 looses heavily.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/19/2010, 8:23 AM
@ bullsize

i kind of disagree with that. not all of it, but some. single player has its place, but we're in a time when multiplayer is a MUST with certain genres. there are VERY few games that come out now that dont have multiplayer. like you said, even Biosuck 2 had it, and it REALLY did not need it. Multiplayer has become very prevalent in the gaming world, so much so, that a lot of games are remembered and rated by them. a lot of it also depends on the genre. games like GOd of War, and most 3rd person action games, don't leave a lot of room for multiplayer. but that doesn't make them any better, or worse becasue of it.

i'll admit, BBC2 doesn't have the greatest single player, its short. but the game's focus is multiplayer. Battlefield games have ALWAYS been focused on Multiplayer. before Bad Company 1 came out, Battlefield games didn't even HAVE singleplayer.

the same can be said about Modern Warfare. sure the single player is fun, but millions of people are still playing it, and NOT because of the single player. on xbox live, there are STILL over 6 million people online playing MW2 at any given time. so no, multiplayer is MUCH more prevalent in certain games than you might think. it extends the replayability, and gives the player many more goals and achievements to reach before totally losing interest in a game.

so i can't agree with your comment that multiplayer is good for a month and then its forgotten. because a truly great game will have people playing it until the next sequel comes out. and both MW2 AND BBC2 are those kind of games. AvP is not...
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/19/2010, 10:27 AM
@ keven

maybe i am psychotic, but in the older games the preds had the energy pistol, and the net gun also. and of course this one is better than those...NOW. but for the time when those came out, they were much better than this one. and also, i spent 2 weeks TRYING to like the online play for AvP, and i only ever got to play 2 maps, the jungle one, and the temple. those are the only ones i EVER saw. like i said, AvP definately had some cool things about it, i'm just really pissed that the online play sucks, and the single player is REALLY short.

you should definately get Mass Effect 2, though. its awesome. but so is Dante's Inferno. the gates of hell mode is seriously hard! and i'll give you that. AvP is WAY better than Biosuck 2. that was a waste of a game right there. rent it if you can.

FYI, SEGA just released a new map pack, "The Swarm" yesterday for AvP. Click here to check out the trailer and find out more about the four new maps!

I would have posted the info yesterday, but I was offline most of yesterday due to some Qwest outages.
