DUNE's Rotten Tomatoes Score Has Been Revealed As The First Reviews For Denis Villeneuve' Sci-Fi Epic Land

The reviews are in for Dune, and while they're definitely positive, it doesn't appear as if Denis Villeneuve' take on the iconic property will be the critical darling many initially expected it to be...

The first Dune reactions found their way online yesterday, but it seems critics in Venice weren't the only ones to catch the movie early. Now, a total of 29 reviews have been counted on Rotten Tomatoes, and Denis Villeneuve's latest sci-fi blockbuster has a decent enough 83% score.

Dune occasionally struggles with its unwieldy source material," reads the Critics Consensus, "but those issues are largely overshadowed by the scope and ambition of this visually thrilling adaptation."

The reviews certainly aren't as glowing as those Tweets, and an awful lot of them point out that the movie could struggle to appeal to a general audience. The odds are already stacked against Dune due to that planned HBO Max release, but if regular moviegoers can't get their heads around it...well, the chances of Villeneuve getting to make a sequel are going to be drastically reduced.

"Villeneuve draws you into an astonishingly vivid, sometimes plausibly unnerving vision of the future," reads the Los Angeles Times review. Entertainment Weekly adds, "If you're already knee-deep in Herbert mythology, you'll thrill to every whispered word; if you come in not knowing the difference between a Holtzman shield and a hole in the floor, it's a longer walk."

The Hollywood Reporter elaborates on that point: "Part hero's journey and part survival story, the film keeps throwing arcane details at you, which might thrill the Herbert geeks but will have most everyone else zoning out." Vanity Fair was similarly unimpressed, noting: "In all its marvel, Dune forgets to do basic things like give us someone or something to root for, or feel for, or think about for longer than the stretch of the film."

On the plus side, USA Today says that, "Even with its imperfections, 'Dune' as an experience is awesome, with astounding special effects, great production design and a propulsive Hans Zimmer score."

Dune is set to be released on October 22, later this year.

Hmm...more mixed than I would've liked but still looking forward to this nonetheless.

@SnideCut - The main problem critics have is that it's just half of a whole movie

Apparently the second half of this just seems like the beginning of the second act, and the story just abruptly ends

@lordSTALE - Yep. The story is not finished.

Here is the proper reading order of Herbert's Dune books:

Reading order:
Dune
Dune Messiah.
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune
Hunters of Dune
Sandworms of Dune
House Atreides
House Harkonnen
House Corrino
The Butlerian Jihad
The Machine Crusade
The Battle of Corrin
Sisterhood of Dune
Mentats of Dune
Navigators of Dune

@tmp3 - "more mixed than I would've liked but still looking forward to this nonetheless"

Imagine getting so triggered by the reality of some negative reviews for this movie, that you don't realize that the commenter is also disappointed by them 🤦🏽‍♂️

@LSHF - Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune

Fixed that for you, lol. Those are "Herbert's Dune books." You listed "the Herberts' Dune books," which is a subtle bur enormous difference.

@DalekCraigWasson - Thank you.

I read the first three in the late seventies or early eighties and wasn't sure what came after that. So, my "research" was obviously not thorough enough.

Thanks again.

@LSHF - No worries! Basically, Chapterhouse is the final book written by Frank Herbert. The rest of them are by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson and are, ahem, not well liked by the fandom. The majority of their books are spin-offs and prequels, although Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune are "based" on Herbert's notes for Dune 7. They do have their fans, but I still thought it was important to point out the original, Frank Herbert saga is a lot shorter.

@DalekCraigWasson - Thanks for the info (for me and for any other readers whom I might have accidently mid-lead).

I hope the movies (if he can finish the story with sequels) do well.

And I hope you enjoy them.

@tmp3 - Troll harder? Dude, I'm a huge Dune fan and Denis fan. This is probably THE most anticipated movie of the year. 83% isn't mixed, I agree but I would be lying if I didn't want this to score in the high 90s, thats how high my expectations for this film are. How is that trolling?

@lordSTALE - Right? If anything, I'm on this dude's side in wanting this film to do great. Don't understand his mentality.

With only 30 critic reviews not a good sign for this movie.

If the reviews are overwhelmingly good - Praise Denis and proclaim that you never had a doubt.

If the reviews are a bit less favorable - The critics don't understand the source material and shouldn't be reliable.

Come on people, you know the drill by now. Let me know what you think about the movie when you watch it. Until then, don't waste your energy on this.

WB: “Listen to me, very carefully my friend…doing a faithful adaption of DUNE…will not bring you the General Audiences.”

Denis: “The General Audiences were never an option.”
