Fox To Push Ahead With "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar Campaign For Andy "Caesar" Serkis!

His motion capture work in Rise of the Planet of the Apes left critics and audiences equally awestruck, and Fox have now confirmed that they'll be giving the actor a well deserved push leading to the race for the the 2012 awards season...

The Los Angeles Times report that 20th Century Fox will indeed campaign for Andy Serkis's motion capture work on Rise of the Planet of the Apes to be acknowledged come awards season. His work as "Gollum" in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and as "King Kong" in King Kong received similar acclaim from critics, but he's yet to receive any serious sort of recognition for his work. In fact, no actor has ever been nominated for any sort of motion capture performance, with Oscar nominated movie Avatar receiving not a single mention for its cast despite being up for nine other awards.

"Our job is to try to have people be aware of and recognize great performances, even when they come in this case in an unusual skin," said Tom Rothman, co-chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment. "I think it's one of the great emotional performances ever. The challenge is to overcome preconceptions and certain prejudices, to have people understand that … the emotionality of the character on screen is not provided by the animators, it's provided by the actor."

Hard to argue with that. Serkis' performance as Caesar was fantastic, and while you have to also give it up for the special effects guys at WETA, it's hard to imagine the character rendered so effectively without a real life human touch. The site go on to confirm that Fox will hold screenings at the Screen Actors Guild and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with the actor participating in Q&As via satellite from the New Zealand set of The Hobbit. Behind the scenes material will also be included in a series of "For Your Consideration" advertisements.

I think he deserves it. I loved the movie more than any this summer including all the cbm's. BUT he won't get it. SAG is run by actors and they will recognize Serkis but he'll fall under special effects category. Watch and see.

Jesus. Dan Radcliffe and Rupert Grint being pushed for Best Actor, and now this? I'm glad the Academy's broadening their horizons, but the studios are turning this into a freaking party. Get real.

The man is a pioneer. We'll have to wait until more diverse performances are noted to see a specific award for this type of acting. In the meantime, hell yeah, Oscar nomination will do !

He should run for lead, Caesar was the protagonist, but it´s good that the studio will campaign for him.

I think that Serkis definitely deserves it and it doesn't matter that he was covered in special effects it was still him doing the acting. If he wasn't there then Caesar would have looked really fake and cheesy.

@Dev you could argue the facial expressions are his own. He acted the role as if he were the character, expressions and all. His expressions were then used and mapped onto the digital Caesar, so really, all of the emotion on Caesar's face was based on Serkis' emotions.

Serkis should definitely be given a nomination at the very least. It'd be a testament to his skill and acting ability. Gollum or Kong or Caesar wouldn't have been the same without him.

As for who should win, I'm not entirely sure yet. I think Gary Oldman might deserve it for Tinker Tailor. Just realized Andy's only been pushed to be nominated for 'supporting'... I was writing this as if he was being pushed for lead, which he was.

OK then, in the supporting category, If he doesnt win, then either Colin Firth or Mark Strong should get it for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

I think he should definitely get nominated at least. I haven't had a chance to see the film yet but at the moment I think Nick Nolte will win Best Supporting Actor for his role in Warrior.

@Catwoman the Oscar for best picture doesn't have the 10 film rule this year. Some of those movies (esp. HP 7.5) wont get the nom because of the new rule.

I agree that he put on a good performance but i don't agree that someone with no dialogue should be nominated for an acting award. If anything it should be the special effects department that is nominated for their work on bringing the character to life on the big screen.
