James Cameron Says AVATAR 2 Delayed Until Late 2017

The sequel to the highest-grossing film of all-time, James Cameron's 2009 science-fiction film Avatar, will be delayed. It was supposed to be released in late 2016, but it will now land in theaters late 2017. Come check it out.

Today in New Zealand, director James Cameron ("The Terminator") was at an event promoting the local film industry along with his friend and fellow director Peter Jackson ("The Hobbit"). During the event, Cameron revealed that his original plan to have Avatar 2 in theaters by late 2016 was too ambitious, so he decided to push its release date to late 2017. The reason? Cameron chose to be aggressive, writing all of the scripts for the three planned Avatar sequels at the same time. "We're writing three simultaneously." Cameron continued, "And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creatures and the environments."

Cameron expects that he and his team of screenwriters with help from screenwriters, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. will have all three scripts completed by the end of this month. "There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film," he said.

Personally, I find it fascinating that Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time (not factoring in inflation), yet interest in the follow-up appears to be tepid at best. We're talking about a film that made $2.8 billion and won three Academy Awards. How is it that nobody seems to be foaming at the mouth for a return to Pandora? Maybe that will change once filming begins. We shall see.

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Stephen Lang

By this time Avatar will be eight years old. It's currently just over five years old, and nobody remembers or talks about Avatar like ever unless the discussion of 3D or highest grossing movies comes up. It was a good experience, but the story wasn't good enough to be in the audience's mind in the long term. I think this movie might suffer due to Cameron waiting so long to release a sequel. By late 2017, people will be way more concerned with Star Wars Episode VIII and comic book movies to give a shit.

I honestly think this movie will never get made. Avatar has barely any fanbase and has left hardly any impact in pop culture. So I think the studio has realised this and no that there won't be much appeal in this franchise continuing.

@TexasTwoFace:

Yeah, but Avengers, Star Wars and Batman, all have (all have, not all of them are) good movies that are more than just CGIfests.
While Avatar is pretty it's nothing else (good-looking crap) and I think if we were to get another 3 movies, it would turn out to be something similar to the shitefest known as the Transformers franchise.

It's not that everybody hates the first one, people just don't give a flying [frick] about the sequels. That simple.

But it's all about the money, not about making good movies. Eveyone watches the Transformers movies, people will see the Avatar sequels, too.

Seriously with all those monsters in 2016 of course they delayed the premiere, that writing excuse it's pretty lame... and the movie it's nothing special just a Dance with Wolves with great CGI.

Avatar was a fantastic movie going experience that reminded me of the magic of cinema. Most 3D attempts since have been pretty pathetic in comparison - Dredd being one exception, hence the huge box office on a not so original and at times strange story. Superhero movies in their current incarnation were had just begun when it was released and have been stealing the excitement ever since I guess. Having said that Avatar 2 is the only movie I plan to actually see in 3D anytime soon. 3 more movies are ambitious and perhaps a combination of it being so long and the original story not entirely engaging makes these threequels now exactly salivating material. But eh Cameron always wanted his own Star Wars.

The highest grossing film of all time. Yeah, it was the first 3d movie in like 30 years, and the tickets were double the price. If they made any billion dollar movie in 3d at that, like pirates or avengers, it would have made 2 billion dollars.
