Joss Whedon Is Happy For VERONICA MARS; But Don't Hold Out For A FIREFLY Revival

Despite a Kickstarter campaign working out VERY well for cancelled tv series Veronica Mars, the Avengers director doesn't envision a similar scenario for his beloved Firefly..at least not while he's busy with those little Marvel movies..

Although we didn't cover it here on CBM I'm sure a lot of you heard about the Veronica Mars Kickstarter madness from the other day. Series creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their long-gestating film treatment with a goal of $2 million - and in a mere 10 hours they had it, breaking records along the way. There was some controversy over a massive corporation asking for money from fans to fund their movie of course, but obviously those fans were only too happy to pitch in to finally see their favorite show get a proper send off. Predictably, this opened the door to many other possibilities and the one show on everyone's lips was Joss Whedon's Firefly. The show already had one movie spin-off called Serenity but fans have wanted to see more from Captain Mal and his crew for many years now. So now it's possible right? Well, not really. Here's what Whedon himself had to say to Buzzfeed on the matter.

“That’s what everybody wants to know about. Uh, yeah. My fourth feeling when I read about [the Veronica Mars Kickstarter campaign] was a kind of dread. Because I realized the only thing that would be on everybody’s mind right now. I’ve said repeatedly that I would love to make another movie with these guys, and that remains the case. It also remains the case that I’m booked up by Marvel for the next three years, and that I haven’t even been able to get Dr. Horrible 2 off the ground because of that. So I don’t even entertain the notion of entertaining the notion of doing this, and won’t. Couple years from now, when Nathan [Fillion]‘s no longer [on] Castle and I’m no longer the Tom Hagen of the Marvel Universe and making a giant movie, we might look and see where the market is then. But right now, it’s a complete non-Kickstarter for me.”

The director goes on to point out that 2 Mill might be fine for something like Veronica Mars but even if he did have the time, something as special effects heavy as Firefly would take quite a bit more moolah. “We come to Veronica Mars to hear her talk and hear her father talk. But Firefly/Serenity, it’s kind of a different animal." To hear more from Whedon click the link below.

I agree 100% that a Firefly movie and Veronica Mars movie are two different animals... Serenetys budget was somewhere around $40million, and thats a whole different thing from VM's $2mill budget. If it cost $2 million for a new Firefly film Im guessing Whedon might make it on his own dime with all his Marvel moolah.
In fact, after Marvel is done theyll probably so willing to let him do whatever he wants that Whedon can probably walk into thier office and go ask for $100million for a new Firefly movie and they'd probably throw it at him.

I love FIREFLY, but I've got the sense over the last few years that Whedon feels like it got murdered, and that the people who love it have been digging up its bones to wave them in his face ever since.

Better to let it rest in peace and remember it fondly.

Let it go. Everything has a time. Firefly has moved on. The fans need to as well. I've was wanting more Farscape, BSG, Lost, Buffy and Angel but now I'm just content with reliving the great memories. Why dig up the old bones and fat actors to try and relive the glory days.

Nobody paid to see the first one - why would they pay to see a 2nd? It was a flop.
It sucked balls, too.

"Marvel's Tom Hagen." Nice. So when Joel Silver wakes one morning to find a horsehead wearing a Wonder Woman tiara in his bed we'll know who sent it.

@scott68 Actually, it made back about three times its budget in the theaters and did very well in video sales. Serenity was considered a success by just about everyone.

Good. Veronica Mars is [frick]ing insipid studio-stained shlock compared to virtually all of his other work.

I watched a bit of Mars back in the day. It was good in a Sunday evening tv kinda way, but never really got the love for it.

from Wiki:

Despite critical acclaim and high anticipation, Serenity performed poorly at the box office. Although several pundits predicted a #1 opening,[66][67][68] the film opened at #2 in the United States, taking in $10.1 million on its first weekend, spending two weeks in the top ten, and closed on November 17, 2005 with a domestic box office gross of $25.5 million.[1] Movie industry analyst Brandon Gray described Serenity's box office performance as "like a below average genre picture".[69]

Serenity's international box office results were mixed, with strong openings in the UK, Portugal and Russia, but poor results in Spain, Australia, France and Italy. United International Pictures canceled the film's theatrical release in at least seven countries, planning to release it directly to DVD instead. The box office income outside the United States was $13.3 million,[1] with a worldwide total of $38.9 million,[70] slightly less than the film's $39 million budget, which does not include the promotion and advertising costs.

I hope we get more Firefly someday, afer Joss is done with Avengers 2 maybe. I'd cough up to that Kickstarter in a heartbeat!

I'd rather see a movie for Angel seeing as how it ended sooner than it was supposed to.
