Reaching theatres on June 12th,
Jurassic World is the fourth entry in the film series that began with 1993's
Jurassic Park. It's directed by Colin Trevorrow and co-stars, among others, Bryce Dallas Howard and the Kingpin himself, Vincent D'onofrio. In the film, Pratt plays Owen Grady, a member of the park's on-site staf who conducts behavioral research on the Velociraptors.
MOVIE MAGIC: When you're talking about a fourth film in this series, the question is whether or not it will be different from what's come before.
CHRIS PRATT: It's been 22 years since the events of
Jurassic Park took place. The main thing that I think is different is we're exploring a different society now. Thematircally we're talking about a generation of people whose relationship to cutting edge, mind-blowing science is different. Since the park has opened, there are 20,000 people a day visiting, but they're just bored with dinosuars. Dinosaurs are not enough.
MOVIE MAGIC: They've grown apathetic to the concept.
CHRIS PRATT: Exactly. They've been around for 20 years. They're not new and exciting the way they would have been back then. They're just another thing that you can see if you want. The executives of Jurassic World are dealing with the financial loss of attendance falling off. They've introduced this newer, bigger, scarier thing to get the kids involved. Of course, that's what they're doing. They're meddling with nature now in a way to generate profit. It's a parable about the classic ethical tale of man meddling with the natural order of things for his own entertainment. Like the first one, but this one has a new theme which is kind of shining a mirror to society that's a little disenfranchised with the wonderment around them. It's definitely a whole new take...a very relevant, topical take on the franchise.
MOVIE MAGIC: Quick
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 question — what are you hoping for in the sequel?
CHRIS PRATT: I'm hoping it stays in space. I'm hoping it doesn't come back to Earth just yet. I want to open up the universe even more and see more of the Marvel cosmos.
