GODZILLA VS. KONG Director Adam Wingard Says "The Ghost Of Ghidorah" Was Controlling Mechagodzilla

Godzilla vs. Kong definitely prioritised action over story, and director Adam Wingard has now attempted to address at least a couple of plot holes, including where Charles Dance's villain vanished to...

Godzilla vs. Kong wasn't a movie that really spent much time worrying about the story, but with two iconic movie monsters going toe-to-toe, many fans who tuned into HBO Max to watch it didn't seem to care! During a recent Reddit AMA ("Ask Me Anything"), director Adam Wingard answered a number of questions and even explained some apparent plot holes.

At the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) was shown purchasing King Ghidorah's severed head, but he was nowhere to be found in Wingard's follow-up. That's a little strange when he should have been pivotal to the creation of Mechagodzilla, and the filmmaker's explanation wasn't overly satisfying.

"Godzilla stepped on him in between movies, unfortunately," Wingard said. "But seriously I love Charles Dance. One of my favorite actors."

So, he clearly didn't have a place for Jonah in Godzilla vs. Kong, but how does the director explain that big Mechagodzilla twist? While the mechanical Kaiju was supposed to be controlled by Ren Serizawa, one fan wondered whether the version that broke free was a completely new consciousness with a new memory or King Ghidorah in a new form looking to take its revenge.

"I think it's the ghost of Ghidorah possessing Mecha's A.I. creating a new personality," Wingard said, clearing that part of the movie up once and for all. The explanation does make sense, but it's a shame the idea wasn't better explored on screen.

What's your take on the filmmaker's comments?

FYI, this comment on Jonah being killed between movies means nothing. If they decide down the line they want to use him, they will. No character is dead until its stated/shown in the story.

@Origame - he is still alive, in the novelisation of GVK

@LameLuka - idk. Never bothered with the novelization as anything canonical. Usually they're just writing an early draft of the script into book form.

Godzilla VS Kong died at box office this week. Went from 398 million to 406 million worldwide in a week.

I predicted 500 million but Godzilla VS Kong won't even get close. 425 will be even tough.

I think them having the Ghidorah skull was a big enough clue for me to put one and two together

Did they cut a plotline around Ren Serizawa being the son of Serizawa from the previous films? Was that just meant as an Easter egg? I feel like a lot of material was removed (though I'm not complaining, because the human stuff they left in was nigh unwatchable, haha). I mean, there HAD to be more to the excellent Lance Reddick's role initially.

Well yeah. That was pretty explicit

Wasnt Mechagodzilla connected to the head of Ghidora? I thought this was implied in the movie. Did people not really know this??

@sKeemAn - Won’t lie, I did not. I thought the AI just turned evil, as they so very often do.

The fact that the Mecha was powered by Ghidorah’s head, I think it was blatantly obvious where that was going. It would have been even better if the head started to regenerate itself and its body to form Mecha Ghidorah after being reactivated with that energy from the Hollow Earth.

But damn, man, MechaG was just straight up hitting some MMA moves on GODZILLA.
I was just like:

That had to be the most mobile and agile Mecha I had ever seen on screen.

Gotta say, haven't watched any prior recent Kong of Godzilla movies... and didn't think highly of this one when i watched it. Too convoluted with inner earth, mega power sources, high tech hovercrafts that are unexplained... and a multitude of villains and poorly used main actors.
I will say I love the old school movies where Godzilla was presented as more of a hero (not in all but in some) and the camera watched Godzilla more from a 'character' aspect than a 'thing' aspect. This movie did that a little with Kong but left out frankly a lot of what an intelligent talking creature like him would be experiencing. I go back to the original recent Hulk movie with Eric Bana. He spoke no words and yet conveyed how he felt a lot more than these creatures. That is the kind of badass Kong and Godzilla i want on screen. If you are going to give me an intelligent speaking Kong then do something with it. Don't simply dumb him down to saying 'home' all the time. And when the two finalized the fight between each other and Kong was down, Godzilla gave him a break. And in that there was a code of honor between the two of them. Because this is not their first tangle... and that language of being long time rivals that are somewhat frenemies in what they do is something that should have been conveyed better. When they team up against Mecha they should have been a real team in doing so... much more than was depicted. My 2 cents.
