THE PREDATOR Star Keegan-Michael Key Says That Reshoots Changed Three-Quarters Of The Film's Third Act

Star of Shane Black's upcoming Predator sequel, The Predator, Keegan-Michael Key recently admitted that the majority of the film's third act was changed in reshoots, as well as praised Black's writing...

Shane Black’s The Predator has completed reshoots that changed much of the third act of the film.

The film was originally slated to be released February 9 before jumping to August and then finally settling in September. While another new release date hasn’t been announced, there’s plenty of hype surrounding the film and its talented cast, even with the movie still months out from its debut.

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Keegan-Michael Key, one of the stars of Shane Black's upcoming sequel The Predator revealed just how extensive the recent reshoots for the film were - and it sounds as if they were quite extensive:

We just finished [reshoots] last week, and just about three-quarters of the third act was rewritten. And Shane Black is… he’s just a consummate professional, and a consummate writer. He’s a wordsmith! It was a really, really exhilarating experience, and I think that he’s still one of our most vibrant writers of cinema.

Most of the third-act being rewritten seems like a pretty concerning change - one that may certainly perterb fans.

An alteration like this that rarely succeeds. World War Z would be another example of a action/horror film that had to reconfigure its entire third act late in the game, as did Justice League and Rogue One. The results may have been passable, but "passable" is certainly not the greatest thing that could be said about a movie. Often times, major changes in reshoots have viewers describing the film as disjointed or Frankenstein-like, which certainly wouldn't be a desired reaction.

That's not to say that Shane Black couldn't pull something great off with this version of The Predator - but with the storyline we know, the lack of promotional materials, and now work of extensive changes, things aren't looking all too promising thus far. A trailer could very well improve that perception, and with Black teasing that one will arrive this month, it dropping anytime now would be appreciated.

What do you think about the actor's comments? Are you worried by the size of the reshoots? Do you have faith, like Key, that Black will deliver?

I like the cast...but this was a terrible promo image to debut. Doesn’t get you hyped at all about the movie.

@regularmovieguy - It is kinda awesome seeing Key as a soldier.

@regularmovieguy - Yeah. I also like this from the perspective of complaints with the last movie. People hated how skinny Brody was, now they hire people just as thin if not thinner.

@Origame -

Trevante Rhodes is in good muscular shape.

@Origame - Predators is one of my favs! I love that film!

@SimplyAz - Kinda. But a big reason was because they were using body builders in the first one. In Predators, they at least had that Russian guy who was pretty big. But their biggest guy here is only kinda tone.

And FYI, I don't really have an issue with their size. I mean, it's not like they have a reasonable chance against the predators physically regardless. It's just funny that they complained about that endlessly before but are apparently ok with even more skinny soldiers this time.

@Origame - Oh Yeah definitely. Having all of these huge guys in the original was a big part of the charm and a very macho film. Would never get made nowadays.

@Nebula - I want to get in the queue. Maybe fill it up with nonsense, and make bucks like Josh
Like "Sky changes color today!" and then the body would be "well, only as it goes down..."

@NicolausCopernicus - You... don't want studios to [potentially] improve their movies after feedback?

@NicolausCopernicus - You do know next to almost every movie ever made goes through re-shoots at some point during the production right? You don't hear about it as much with smaller movies as the directors can more easily go over their footage in real time and do re-shoots at the end of their main production phase before post.

On a tangent (since this is a Fox movie) Fox President Peter Rice "told Fox employees that the (Disney) transaction will most likely be completed by end of summer 2019 at the latest, close to the 18-month conservative initial projection." -Deadline

So it's looking like Disney will own the studio before "The New Mutants" gets released, at least.

@ODanil - Reshoots may not matter as much, but an entire act of a film being changed?

I just hope this movie is good. And hopefully they keep the focus of the film on the forest setting.

Even Marvel films have reshoots and turn out well! LOL!

I wouldn't be too concerned about The Predator reshoots. Look at the unprecedented reshoots for "All the Money in the World", then ended up with a load of nominations!

(And Deadpool 2 will be fine with the added reshoots for sure).
