Rupert Wyatt & Justin Lin Headline Paramount's STAR TREK 3 Director Shortlist

Paramount are rumoured to be eyeing five directors for 2016's as-of-yet untitled third Star Trek movie. Among the list of candidates to replace JJ Abrams are Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes's Rupert Wyatt and Fast Five's Justin Lin. Hit the jump to check them out!

It seems that Paramount are looking at some very talented directors to fill the void left by Star Wars: The Force Awakens' JJ Abrams. Deadline are reporting that the studio have put together a shortlist of five filmmakers in the wake of Roberto Orci's sudden departure from the project. The list includes Rupert Wyatt (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes) and Justin Lin (Fast Five) - names that aren't likely to be unfamiliar to most movie fans. Duncan Jones (Source Code) is another interesting choice, despite potentially having a very hectic schedule over the next few months with his much-anticipated Wacraft movie (also due for a 2016 release).

Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and Oscar-tipped Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) round off the list - with the latter having just finished up working with Benedict Cumberbatch (who played 'Khan' in Star Trek Into Darkness). I'm sure you'll all agree they're an extremely talented bunch, but which one do you want to take over Abrams' mantle? Let us know in the comments below!

I'd be happy with Rupert Wyatt and Duncan Jones, they could both work, not sure about Justin Lin though.

So much for Edgar Wright being top choice then. Any of the above would be good.

Rupert Wyatt is my number one choice of the five because of his utterly fantastic work on Rise of the Apes. Duncan Jones and Justin Lin are a close second and third. Jones is definitely the better directer but I fear he might be too occupied with Warcraft due for the same year which is why I put Lin so close. Daniel Espinosa and Morten Tyldum are fourth and fifth. Both are talented directors but new to the major blockbuster, I'm not saying they shouldn't get into it since everybody needs a first try, but their first major blockbuster shouldn't be the third installment of a series. Put Espinosa before Tyldum just because he's at least had experience with Safe House.

No Edgar Wright though? I'd love to see him take over the property after that bitter Ant-Man disappointment.

Hey, it's a Minty article! Good catch, sir!

Ruperty Wyatt is a pretty inspired choice (LOVE Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and I'd be really interested to see what he does with Star Trek.

No matter what, ANYONE would be a massive improvement over Roberto Orci. This is nothing but good news for the Trek franchise.

Lin would be interesting and i think he could do it. I love his style and he directs ensembles well. Wyatt seems like a fan favorite. But Lin has a lot of projects already on his plate so Wyatt is the most likely chocie

Duncan Jones already said he doesn't want to do it.

@SauronsBANE - Cheers bro! Yeah just saw it pop up on Twitter and just went for it. Writing news articles is so much more stressful than editorials though. The clock's always ticking!

Wyatt would be my preferred choice. Loved Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and The Gambler looks pretty good too.

I like my articles....MINTY! @minty

No way Duncan does it with all the post-production on WARCRAFT. Definitely want Wyatt the most out of this shortlist.

@Minty Haha tell me about it!

I'm hoping this makes main, but it seems they've been taking a lot of user-made news articles off main lately, no matter how great and well-written they are. Unfortunate!

@Reasonnnn - Haha you know it! Yeah I thought that was a bit strange. Perhaps Paramount would delay the movie's release for him? He seems worth the wait.

@SauronsBANE - Yeah it's a little discouraging it didn't, but at first the article was a bit messy. Now I've had time to touch it up a little I think it's alright, but I understand how fast this world of breaking news is. Still, it's a big story, so I hope more people get to see it.

Hmm I hope they're not just taking them off just cause we're not editors. The likes of you, Dev, Nova and Pasties have had some really well written stuff in the past.

@Minty Yeah, I don't know if their policy for user-submitted news is getting stricter or what, but it seems like it takes a LOT for one to reach main nowadays. It sucks! All that effort to write it up, and it doesn't even get many views because its stuck here. Especially one that's as nice-looking and coherent as this one.

Don't let the man get you down! =P

@SauronsBANE - Ah well, it's decent writing experience in the end. One day buddy... one day... :P

@Minty I think Paramount wants that 50th Anniversary 2016 Summer release date. Maybe they should do a Thor/Hunger Games and release it in late fall/winter
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 12/15/2014, 9:43 AM
@Minty That's the spirit!

Also, the inclusion of a School of Rock/Jack Black gif should be enough to automatically put ANY article on main, but that's a topic for another day I suppose...
Minty
Minty - 12/15/2014, 9:55 AM
@Reasonnnn - Good point! Yeah they're not gonna wanna miss out on that. Hmm 2016 just seems so crowded. November's probably the best place but even that's got Doctor Strange

@SauronsBANE - Haha preach!

@monkey He's probably doing pre-production on his next film, Baby Driver.

Daniel Espinosa, imo. Safe House even made Reynolds look awesome.
