Ian McDiarmid Comments On Returning As 'The Emperor' In Live-Action STAR WARS TV Show

The highly anticipated live-action Star Wars TV series still doesn't seem any closer to happening than it was the last time we got an update, but Ian McDiarmid has shared his thoughts on whether he would be interested in returning as 'The Emperor'.

Appearing at a Q&A session at the 'Star Wars Celebration VI' convention, British actor Ian McDiarmid revealed that he would definitely be interested in appearing in the long talked about live-action Star Wars TV show, reprising his role as 'The Emperor'. However, it doesn't sound as if he's spoken to anyone involved with the project just yet as he went on to express a desire to further explore the origins of the villain (something which would be unlikely as the series reportedly will bridge the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

"It would be nice if one day they would be followed up...who knows? Who knows if Palpatine would be in it? It could be like A New Hope. There could be a terrific representative -- and by god, Peter Cushing was a terrific actor -- doing the emperor’s bidding. If he happened to pop up in the script I would hate if it was to go live and someone else were to be in it."

Many thanks to IGN TV for the above quote. Would you like to see 'The Emperor' return in the series? Comments earlier this year from Rick McCallum have indicated that the series would focus on, "the Empire slowly building up its power base around the galaxy, what happens in Coruscant, which is the major capital, and it’s [about] a group of underground bosses who live there and control drugs, prostitution." This would probably mean that the focus would be taken off the Jedi and Empire, although it certainly wouldn't be bad thing to see cameo appearances from iconic characters like 'Darth Vader' and 'The Emperor'.

Heck. Yes. Do it! This show sounds awesome already (if it ever happens), and adding Ian to the cast would be insane! This guy was one of the best actors in the whole prequels. It would be great since it's saying that the empire's power will be rising, they could have moments that tie into the story where we see Palpatine in the senate winning people over to join them. And also some scenes with Vader getting orders from him. And a side thought, I want Jedi showing up to be very rare, but when they do, it's epic. Like have an episode where a bounty hunter is hired to kill a hiding Jedi. Oh yeah. This show could be the making of much nerdgasms in the future :D

Yeah right... As if Father Christmas would allow drugs and prostitution in the Star Wars universe. The concept art shown above is for the next Star Wars game, don't expect to see something like it on TV.

@Darkmetal;

Actually, it is.
The official line is currently the episodes are costing too much per episode. At the scale they wnt to do them there are working out production-wise as a couple of million, and they want to get that down to a couple of hundred thousand per episode. Thats the reason behind the apparent 'developmental hell'.

I suspect that the emphasis on cost wil likely mean that it will be as greenscreen-heavy as the prequels, which would be a shame in my opinion.

From EW.com:

McCallum said of Star Wars: Underworld;
“It’s just a working title.” A working title that may actually be quite revealing. The series has long been thought to focus on either peripheral characters from the movies or new characters outright — with nary a Jedi in sight — during the 19-year span between Episode III and Episode IV, the period during which the Empire was still consolidating its grip on that Galaxy Far, Far Away. “Underworld” suggests that the series will focus on the galaxy’s sordid demimonde. “Absolutely,” McCallum confirms. “Expect a lot of smugglers, gangsters, bounty hunters, and a few Wall Street-type power brokers. Nothing about Luke or the Skywalker saga.”

The initial appeal of the series was that it would fill in a relatively blank part of Star Wars history. But in the years since Episode III, a number of comics, novels, and videogames (all considered canon, since they’re officially licensed by Lucasfilm) have begun to shed new light on that period, possibly presenting some continuity constraints for a series. In fact, a number of behind-the-scenes moves over the past few years have fueled speculation: George Lucas himself ordered that popular Jedi rogue Quinlan Vos survive the Star Wars: Republic comics series; A.C. Crispin’s proposed young Princess Leia novel series was canceled, as was a Boba Fett novel to be penned by Mandalorian obsessive Karen Traviss. Could this mean that Vos, Leia, and Fett could be involved in a TV series?

Obviously, McCallum isn’t saying. But the fact that over 50 scripts have been penned “by writers hailing from Europe, Australia, and North America,” according to McCallum, suggests that the show could be envisioned as an anthology series, sort of like a television analogue to the Tales of the Mos Eisley Cantina short-story project in the ’90s, with many already-established aspects of the Expanded Universe included.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for a long time indeed, to find out. When I asked McCallum if the show is still three or four years off, he said, “Even longer. Because I think we don’t have the technology yet to be able to do it for the level of money that it would have to be done. Plus, the world of television is imploding. No one knows whether you should make a network show or a cable show. I’m really excited about it though, and I hope George does do it. I really do.”

The minute Lucas took back total control over Star Wars with the making of Return of the Jedi, everything good about Star Wars went into a steep decline. Every Star Wars movie made after TESB has been dumb ass make-it-up as you go stories loosely holding a string of sequences based on over-elaborate spectacle and tomfoolery.

If the Ewoks delt a vicious wound, then Jar Jar killed it dead for me. If I can get back all the money I wasted since the age of 10 back in '77 from being a Star Wars fan, I'd be rich!

The only good thing to ever come out of SW since TESB is the Master Replica lightsabers! Frak George Lucas and his TV series.

I think a Star Wars TV series would be a cool thing to see, I hope Lucasfilm figures out how they want to budget it so it can finally go into production. I don't think that episodes 7, 8, and 9 are all that necessary, the films in the original trilogy are some of the best movies ever made, they should leave the story there.
