Leonardo DiCaprio Passed On 'STAR WARS: EPISODE VII' For 'ROBOTECH' ?

Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly passed on a role in J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII" to pursue a role in an adaptation of Robotech. Is the live-action adaptation finally gaining traction?

Reportedly, famous A-list actor Leonardo DiCaprio (The Great Gatsby, Inception) was up for a role in Star Wars but passed because he is keen on landing a role in a live-action adaptation of (what Americans know as) "Robotech". Without going too deeply into the completed history of which Japanes anime series the footage in "Robotech" originates from, the anime tells the story of humanity in a far distant future and their battle against the alien Zentraedi. The conflict resides over an alien ship that crashes on Earth and the the efforts by the aliens to retrieve it. In the midst of the conflict, humans gain knowledge of the limitless energy known as "protoculture," a discovery that's a launch point for future "Robotech" series. The primary protagonists of the series is a young pilot named Rick Hunter, which is presumably the role DiCaprio would be after.

Back in January, newcomer Nic Mathieu was hired by Warner Bros. to direct the picture so it appears that development on the film is highly active. Back in 2007, actor Tobey Maguire, at the height of his "Spider-Man" fame tried to get a live-action Robotech film off the ground but it sputtered and flamed out before it could take off. British television writer and novelist Tom Rob Smith (Child 44) was the last person on a long list of writer to take a shot at the script.

As far as Star Wars: Episode VII, while DiCaprio is reportedly out of the mix, two other actors are still in the running, Ryan Gosling and Zac Effron. More on that story HERE.

Do not need the baggage that comes with overly famous people in SW movies.
Find quality actors & big names can PISS OFF!

@Omarvls Biggest flops? It's near $200M already and still has to open in most of the Asian markets. It may just barely earn enough to at least leave the question of a sequel in limbo.

Sorry, but Robotech is a bastardized, butchered melding of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada. Robotech right now is sooooo unnecessary because those of us who watched, have matured beyond it and embrace the source material.

This the opening sequence from the Macross movie, Macross: Do You Remember Love, which aired in Japan in 1984, a year before Robotech debuted in the U.S.

Soon as they said Zack Effron is in the running, i found this report to be BS. Lucasfilm released that statement ( i think this site posted it ) about no Twilight stars or Disney star actors because of the backlash they know that would follow.

If you ever catch his acting in films like The Beach, Body of Lies, and J.Edgar you'll see why they consider him for such big roles.

The guy is a brilliant actor...people need to stop thinking in that "Titanic/ Romeo & Juliet' mentality...

Ok...people, Robotech is nothing like Pacific Rim. Do some research. Also, Pacific Rim is right now sitting at around $180 mil worldwide, and it's expected to make over $100 mil domestically and and additional $150 to $250 mil internationally. While it underperformed, it will make it's money back, and should not be considered a flop.

@DrRockso I don't think Leo could have saved the script and directing.

Now we're talking! Robotech was an awesome show which should get a live-action adaptation. If this turns out to be true, it would be great news indeed.

instead of him you got anakin, and back then people were bitching about leo the way they're bitching about efron. efron's a pretty good actor.

Loved Robotech. Amazing how they were able to place 3 different Japanesse cartoons back to back and had english language added to get a series that spanned several years.

Read this over on Hisstank.com

Harmony Gold, owners of the Robotech IP and by extension Macross in the USA, have filed a complaint that Hasbro's recent SDCC 2013 exclusive G.I. Joe VS Transformers Skystriker Jetfire has infringed on their IP. The action, submitted to the US District Court, seeks injunctive relief and damages from Hasbro.

Basically they want money and all remaining stock to be destroyed. So if you picked one up at SDCC, you're lucky.

Leonardo DiCaprio turned down Star Wars (AGAIN) to star in an anime, live action adaption that not many know about?!?

Wow...

@HarmonyGold is the biggest impediment to getting anything Macross related here in the U.S. Heck, there's still a question over whether or not Harmony Gold even has the right to Macross in the U.S.

We don't need Robotech! We need Macross!

1. Leo is too old to play Rick Hunter. He was 16 at the start of the Macross series.

2. Robotech is nothing like Pacific Rim. Idiots. Pacifi Rim is more like Specter Man or Voltron. Robotech is more of a space opera. It's closer to Battlestar Galactica, but not really but that's the closest I can thinkg of.

3. Screw you American haters who think that the original Mospeada and the other drek that was piled together to create Robotech is better. The America version is way better than the Japanese version. I wish Robotech would have threw off more of its Japanese influence. Japanimation is for 40 year old fat guys who wish they were dating Japanese girls with little feet.

4. I can't wait to see this made into a movie. The film technology is finally here for a Robotech movie, but legal issues may keep this baby in limbo for the next 30 years.

Robotech movie? F*CK YES, I loved it as a kid. I know they took 3 unrelated series and made it into a big one, but I don't care, so...yeah, screw you.
starring Leo? as long he's not Rick Hunter. get an actually young actor to play him.
