Here's A List Of The Box Office Records STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Has Broken So Far

We've been telling you for weeks about the various box office records which Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken, but now a list has been compiled which will BLOW YOUR MIND. While it may not beat Avatar's worldwide record, it'll be hard for a future release to top this...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a box office smash, and while we've heard all about the various records it's broken since December 16th, seeing them collected like this (courtesy of IGN) is pretty amazing. Analysts believe that it's now on track to top Titanic as the second highest grossing movie of all-time, and while you might think that Disney are disappointed that it won't beat Avatar, it's doubtful that any 2016 release will beat these records, so The Force Awakens looks set to be the king for the foreseeable future. Star Wars Episode VIII perhaps? We'll have to wait and see!

  • Fastest film to reach $100 million (21 hours), $200 million (3 days), $300 million (5 days), $400 million (8 days), $500 million (10 days), $600 million (12 days), and $700 million (16 days)
  • Biggest all-time debut and biggest December debut ($248 million)
  • Biggest second weekend of all time ($149.2 million)
  • Biggest third weekend of all time ($90.2 million)
  • Biggest Thursday preview gross ($57 million)
  • Biggest Friday, opening, and single day ($119.1 million)
  • Biggest Sunday ($60.55 million), Monday ($40.1 million), and Tuesday ($37.3 million)
  • Biggest Christmas Day ($49.3 million) and New Year’s Day ($34.4 million)
  • Highest per-theater average for a wide debut ($59,982)
  • Biggest opening week ($390.9 million)
  • Biggest IMAX debut ($30.1 million)

Starring original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker, and franchise newcomers, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now in theatres. How many times have you seen it?

@Pasto I think in general those comments refereed to the World Wide take for TFA vs Avatar. That contest is still undecided and not certain either way. It really comes down to how well TFA does in China now.

People that said are talking about the 2.7 billion dollar mark....not the U.S. total.

It all rests on how China performs.

All these records are in domestic maket....

Overseas Star wars 7 will suffer to be able to do half of that Avatar did.

Has there been a fact vs. fiction post on the rumors yet? I imagine it would be an enormous undertaking with all the speculation that happened.

I nominate Josh to tell us how many of Eh Maybe's scoops came true.

Star wars 7 won't beat Avatar worldwide , overseas the difference is very big, Avatar is much larger overseas than Star wars 7.

Not going to catch Avatar. China would have to practically put up a billion on it's own.

People abroad think Star wars is a very nerd "thing", and has visual dated, that's why Star wars not make so successful abroad.

It has $112milion to go before it beats Jurassic World.
All that money that Jurassic World earned. Because it was released in the summer.
There has been a bit of a drop off on Star Wars, though. Now that the Holidays are over.
I'd be nice to see a resurgence.
Maybe they should do a Special Edition. Clean it up a bit. Add some fvcking wipe-edits. Change the name. Like that.

The force awakens is not a great movie, it's just a great nerd movie, Is Star wars 7 we're talking, not the godfather...

I loved this movie, and i think the bashing is just haterlash. And I think the New Hope parallels are cool, not lazy.

But this movie has NOTHING on Avatar, which was brilliant. Avatar haters try to make themselves sound legit by bringing up comparisons to dances with wolves and pocahontas and ferngully and whatever, but it's kind of pathetic because nobody whined when those movies ripped off each other, or Tarzan or John Carter or Romeo and [frick]ing Juliet. Or when Star Wras ripped off Flash Gordon and that Kurosawa Fortress movie. Movies rework old plots all the time.

The world-building, the newly created languages, the tribal culture, the physical grounding of the spiritual plane... the invention and creativity that went into Avatar is unparalleled. I am a big SW fan, but as far as new ideas Avatar leaves Star Wars in the dust. And it takes itself far more seriously, except for the floating islands. And Sam W's acting, if you can call it that.

And since when is it wrong to include a moral message in a movie? Why, because it 's a "libtard hippy" message that conflicts with your own opinion? Who cares? I don't agree with Frank Miller's fascist superheroes, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the books.

I mean, if you honestly think Avatar is a bad movie, that's your opinion. But there are so many bandwagon haters it's annoying. Even if you think it's derivative and unoriginal, it doesn't "suck." That's just being childish.

Anyway, I hope Avatar keeps its spot. The plot may not be completely original, but the universe is. And at least it isn't #7 in a series.

And to the people that bitch about unobtanium... why is that sillier than californium or berklium or americium?

Hey has everyone heard about the petition to name the newly discovered heavy metal "lemmium"? Brill.

@AlternateNo4

You are completely right about everything you said. Avatar is a great movie, movies borrow plots from other movies all the time. Bandwagon haters are really annoying, especially on this site. *coughFrozenJoycough*

Tremendous achievement for TFA but it will not beat Avatar worldwide, considering TFA is dropping like 40 % a week. Avatar did something very unusual during its run, it box office was going up with each week, considering its opening wknd of 77 million.
