STAR WARS EPISODE IX Director J.J. Abrams Weighs In On THE LAST JEDI Backlash And Wanting To Satisfy Fans

Star Wars Episode IX director J.J. Abrams comments on whether or not the backlash aimed at The Last Jedi changed his plans, and reveals that he hopes fans will be "satisfied" with his planned finale...

Despite many fans being under the belief that Star Wars: The Last Jedi "killed" the franchise, we won't know whether or not that's the case until Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters this December.

Should that underperform in the same way Solo: A Star Wars Story did, then it's clear that this modern era of Star Wars movies is indeed being rejected by fans and moviegoers alike; however, should it earn over $1 billion, then there's no way it can be written off as anything other than a hit for Disney.

Regardless, director J.J. Abrams was recently asked if the backlash aimed at The Last Jedi has had any sort of impact on his plans, and responded: "No, I think that every movie is its own movie and, obviously, this is a trilogy. We brought to that movie all the passion and hard work that we would have no matter what. I think the story speaks for itself."

As for what fans should expect from Episode IX, the filmmaker expressed his excitement about the movie before revealing what he hopes we'll take away from it. "You'll have to determine that yourself, but I really can't wait for you to see it. There are a lot of words that we all hope that you'll feel and, obviously, the biggest, most important one, I think, is satisfied."

The finale of the Skywalker Saga is obviously a big deal, and seeing as both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are now dead, it's hard to say how Abrams will go about delivering an ending which makes longtime fans and those rooting for the likes of Rey and Kylo Ren truly "satisfied." We'll find out this December.

I like him but I do tend to stare at his nose a lot.

@Soos - I find it amazing that Disney found a director with a nose that looks like the giant worm from Empire Strikes Back. What were the chances?

I just hope he properly answers the question he raised in VII himself. There is just so much still left unaddressed

@MalseMarcel -
Its not going to happen. He was brought in to make a mystery with as many questions as possible to give other writers room to answer and develop.

It has been confirmed by everyone involed that no plan exists, no storyboard and that JJ never intended to answer any of the questions that he wrote - JJ has also praised Rian's The Last Jedi multiple times. Anything unanswered from TFA will go unanswered in Episode 9 and the trilogy that follows.

@Scarilian - For the most part I actually liked VII and VIII, but I'll b damned if that isn't the most frustrating thing I have found with this trilogy. I feel that not knowing the answer to basic questions like, "Who is the First Order" and "Where did Snoke come from" does not help the story at all.

@Scarilian @TheAstoundingMan - The thing that bothers me most with all these questions is that they kinda do have to be answered, but probably won't. By the time Return of the Jedi was out George Lucas knew he was gonna make a prequel trilogy explaining all the backstory in the then already redubbed episodes V and VI. The sequel trilogy just doesn't have that privelege

All they need to do is
1. Dont make it so similar to what came before
2. Make it different, but dont lessen the events of what came before.
Episode 7 was way too similar to Episode 4
Episode 8 pretty much threw away all the set up of Episode 7, and lessened the acomplishments of the original trilogy. Plus so much pointless filler.

Sorry you two. I just thought it was a funny gif. Yoda’s interaction with R2 was brilliant.

TLJ’s “hold for...” scene, not so much.

@Soos - @Soos - I feel like the only humor that has worked in the new films was the Droid from rogue one. His personality and insincere attitude just worked...like really well.

But with with the new trilogy it’s just been brought up at the worst times and is just so awkward. The aliens on Solo’s ship eating the guys was so slap stick that it hurt to watch for a Star Wars film for me and I don’t even want to begin on tlj.

Just no excited for this, the management of the star Wars series has been all wrong,
Star Wars shouldn't have been a yearly movie franchise, the previous trilogies had 16 years between them, each film in those trilogys had 3 years between them, plenty of time to build hype and work out the story. Now its one a year and they just arent taking chances and are doing the same shit again.
E7: retread of episode 4
Rogue 1: Actually pretty good
E8: Some good ideas but badly executed
Solo: Nobody asked for it
They are just sticking with this timeline of stories set during the 3 sagas, do something different, do something like the first Jedi, and show the first Sith, or do something set in the far future when all the characters we know are gone and tell a story with characters who can stand on their own

Satisfying Star Wars fanatics? The one fandom that probably hates the very thing they claim to be fans of? Good luck JJ.

Oh also, The Last Jedi was a masterpiece and the best Star Wars movie to come out by far.
