Despite many fans being under the belief that Star Wars: The Last Jedi "killed" the franchise, we won't know whether or not that's the case until Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters this December.
Should that underperform in the same way Solo: A Star Wars Story did, then it's clear that this modern era of Star Wars movies is indeed being rejected by fans and moviegoers alike; however, should it earn over $1 billion, then there's no way it can be written off as anything other than a hit for Disney.
Regardless, director J.J. Abrams was recently asked if the backlash aimed at The Last Jedi has had any sort of impact on his plans, and responded: "No, I think that every movie is its own movie and, obviously, this is a trilogy. We brought to that movie all the passion and hard work that we would have no matter what. I think the story speaks for itself."
As for what fans should expect from Episode IX, the filmmaker expressed his excitement about the movie before revealing what he hopes we'll take away from it. "You'll have to determine that yourself, but I really can't wait for you to see it. There are a lot of words that we all hope that you'll feel and, obviously, the biggest, most important one, I think, is satisfied."
The finale of the Skywalker Saga is obviously a big deal, and seeing as both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are now dead, it's hard to say how Abrams will go about delivering an ending which makes longtime fans and those rooting for the likes of Rey and Kylo Ren truly "satisfied." We'll find out this December.
