At a time when Lucasfilm was struggling to get any Star Wars movie off the ground, word started trickling out regarding a number of projects the studio supposedly had in the works.
Among them was a movie from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, with the veteran producer turning to Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron to pen the screenplay. There was a lot of excitement among fans given Feige's love of Star Wars, but it's still nowhere to be seen.
That perhaps explains why we've recently heard rumblings it's been sidelined as Feige focuses on the MCU and Waldron on Avengers: Secret Wars.
Talking at Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy was asked about the movie and claimed, "Nothing ever got developed...we never discussed an idea."
Puck's Matthew Belloni has since weighed in on her claims (via SFFGazette.com), correctly pointing out that not only has Waldron discussed writing the movie on multiple occasions, but it was actually announced by Alan Horn, the former Walt Disney Studios Chairman and Chief Creative Officer.
Could it be that Kennedy wasn't entirely on board with the Marvel Studios boss being given his own Star Wars movie and may have even seen him as a threat? Rumours have persisted for years that he could replace her as Lucasfilm President...
Between all this and the fact the "co-production" was actually mentioned on the Star Wars YouTube channel, was Kennedy not being truthful when it comes to Feige's planned - and likely now scrapped - movie? In this new interview, she even goes so far as to say, "It's not an abandoned project. It just never really happened."
Lying or saving face? It's hard to say, but Kennedy has clashed with countless filmmakers in recent years, with more projects than we can count ultimately failing to materialise. Among them are those from Josh Trank, Patty Jenkins, and Phil Lord & Chris Miller, a duo fired in the midst of shooting Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Are you disappointed Feige won't be heading into a Galaxy Far, Far Away?
