STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC Video Game Remake Put On Hold; May Not Be Released Until 2025

Another highly anticipated video game has been hit with a significant delay, and things really aren't looking good for the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake based on this latest update...

Fans have been massively excited for the upcoming remake of 2003's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but Bloomberg (via SFFGazette.com) has revealed that the game is now in "serious trouble."

Apparently, it's been hit by an indefinite delay after some big changes at developer Aspyr Media. The studios recently fired the game's art director and design director, and Apsyr's heads have reportedly told employees that they've hit the pause button on the project while looking for new contracts and development opportunities.

This long-awaited remake was first announced last September and has been in development for nearly three years. At the end of June, Aspyr is said to have finalised a demo of the game that was well-received by Lucasfilm executives, but it was the following week they dismissed those key creatives, Brad Prince and Jason Minor, totally out of the blue.

The site adds that staff have been told the vertical slice, a fully-playable portion of a game that shows its developer's intended player experience, isn't where they want it to be. It sounds like a lot of time and money had gone into perfecting the demo, but maintaining that level of quality for the game itself wasn't possible.

We don't know what the future holds in store for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but a game that was on track to be released in late 2022/early 2023 is now unlikely to see the light of day until 2025 (if at all).

Saber Interactive is likely to take over the project from here, but nothing has been confirmed, and this is a disappointing development for a game fans have been waiting on for a very long time. We find it hard to believe Lucasfilm will allow it to fall by the wayside, but as Star Wars games are no longer being developed exclusively by EA, they have a lot of irons in the fire.

I wonder who Saber is going to give it to now they took it from Aspyr

Star Wars is in such a rough spot that they can't even make a game that's already been made

@OmegaDaGrodd - hopefully because they are doing a movie and are going to tie the new game into the new movie?

@thewanderer - I doubt it's because they're also doing a movie.

I can see them making changes to it so that fits with/becomes canon though.

@OmegaDaGrodd - To be fair though, it's not an HD port, it was an actual full on remake. Similar to Resident Evil 4's remake where yeah same story, but all new gameplay mechanics, graphics, etc.

However I do not believe "Sabre" or any subsidiary like Aspyr of Sabre is gonna be able to give it justice.

Well that sucks. If this means we'll get a better final product though, delays aren't bad. Especially because we'll have Jedi Survivor in the meantime anyway.

@bkmeijer1 - my thoughts exactly. I hope this doesn't get cancelled altogether though

@BigDriggs - that would suck pretty badly. Think it won't though, if it has been in development for three years already. Saber'll hopefully take over the assets

@bkmeijer1 - that's what I was thinking. I'm sure they're invested to much time and money that there's no way they'd just cancel it. But then again I'm not an expert in the video game industry.

Well this game is probably dead. Oh well, was looking forward to it...

I sense a similar fate to Star Wars Eclipse the more I think about it.

Rumor has it that it got delayed because the contracts for the old cast and creators has to end in 2025 first. #rumorsarenews2

@slickrickdesigns - If that was true then why would they fire the game directors? I have a feeling it's because what they showed to the PlayStation and Lucasfilm (or whoever oversees Star Wars game content) heads was not good enough.
MachinimaMan
MachinimaMan - 7/28/2022, 11:39 AM
@LongMayHeReign - Well for three years it states they worked on the game only to work on a very great demo but not enough to sustain itself after that.

So LucasFilm Games probably thought it looked great, but maybe expensive as hell to make, and maybe also looked at a whole to learn for three years they were only able to procure a demo as a "test"? Not to mention the money going into this would be insane for such a remake when quite frankly...I don't think it is needed.

@LongMayHeReign - I’m pretty sure @slickrickdesigns was making a joke.

@MachinimaMan - Considering Aspyr is a pretty untested studio and the project is apparently going to be taken over by their parent company Saber Interactive I kinda doubt they had an amazing showing that was just behind schedule.

KOTR was fantastic. There is no need to reboot it. There are fantastic characters and stories to tell from that game.

But you know that Kathleen Kennedy is going to reimagine KOTR and inject her identity politics and agenda just to change yet one more classic from the Lucas era.

@bobevanz - I wish. Ever since Disney bought Marvel & Lucasfilm, the gaming side of these IPs have just been underwhelming. Although some good hits, just not like before.

I don't really want a remake of KOTOR anyways, I'd love a spiritual sequel.
Doesn't even have to be set in the Old Republic, they can force in their beloved High Republic if they want to.

I'm all for new stories, not remakes.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/29/2022, 3:47 AM
@Blergh - I do like remakes, as it gives me the opportunity to play games with today's standards. Mafia and Resident Evil 2 are good examples, as they feel like completely new games.

Remasters though, now those are on the lazy side

I’d rather it get delayed so they can get it right and the workers don’t have to deal with crunch than rush it out the door and make the employees and resulting game suffer.

I’m someone who actually likes TROS, but I could tell while watching that JJ and company had to rush it’s production…
