STAR WARS Novels Cancelled To Make Room For EPISODE VII

Various Star Wars publishing projects have been indefinitely postponed to avoid continuity conflicts as Episode VII casts its long shadow over years of Star Wars stories.

A Thursday night article on theforce.net cites tweets from author Christie Golden on the indefinite postponement of her trilogy "Sword of the Jedi." The first volume was due later this year. She says:

Sword of the Jedi is on hold until story group decides what the new continuity is going to be. As soon I know & can discuss, you will hear!

— Christie Golden (@ChristieGolden) January 24, 2014

She then responds to clarify her statement:

@theforcenet all… I know what you know re whether SW continuity will changed or not. Don't read anything more into my comments than that! ;)

The trilogy was intended to be a continuation of Jaina Solo's story, who is given the title "Sword of the Jedi," by Luke Skywalker in the New Jedi Order series. For those not versed in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, she is the daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa.

Golden goes on to say that the books being put on hold isn't really new news:

SotJ has been on hold for a while now, & I have been saying that publicly. I trust Leland & Pablo to determine what's best for Star Wars!

The "Sword of the Jedi" trilogy is not the only publishing project put on hold to make way for Episode VII territory. An untitled two book series by Paul S. Kemp has been put on ice as well. Also, a third edition of The Essential Guide to Characters had been announced, postponed and ultimately cancelled.

So what does this say about Episode VII, the intentions of Leland Chee and Pablo Hidalgo and the ultimate future of the Expanded Universe? Probably nothing at this point. "Sword of the Jedi," would have been set during a time period that would overlap the new films. As to how previous expanded universe fit into the new continuity retrofit, we will have to cultivate patience for always in motion the future is.
