STAR WARS REBELS: SPARK OF REBELLION Review; "A Solid Start To This New Series"

Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion premiered on Disney XD, but was it worth checking out? Promising to fill the gaps between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, Disney's first Star Wars project has a lot riding on it, and you can find my spoiler-free verdict after the jump...

I wasn't expecting much from Star Wars Rebels. However, the fact that it's the first project to come out of Disney since they purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion and apparently has at least some vague ties to J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII meant that curiosity got the better of me. And, well, what a pleasant surprise! Though it unfortunately shares some similarities to the prequels (characters and designs which were clearly designed with toy sales in mind), the spirit of this series is very much in the vain of the original trilogy. However, it does have a lighter and more comedic tone which may not sit well with anyone hoping for an animated version of The Empire Strikes Back, though you have to remember that it is ultimately a show aimed at younger viewers. That aside, this 40 minute opener is a solid introduction to a very likeable group of characters who should go a big way in making this a must-watch series. They're a varied bunch and it's hard to find fault with any of them at this point; they're classic Star Wars/hero archetypes and getting to know them and their backstories as time progresses will also be a reason to return each week.

Interestingly, "Spark of Rebellion" doesn't go overboard with references to big name Star Wars characters and that works to the first episode's advantage as we instead spend the majority of time being introduced to these new additions to the canon rather than countless Easter Eggs (there are a few fun ones well worth keeping an eye out for though). The story is standard stuff really, but there are some neat twists and turns along with some cool reveals and moments. There's also one of those classic Star Wars scenes which will send a shiver down your spine if you're a fan and the throwbacks to the movies in terms of the music, sound effects (God, I missed that Tie Fighter sound) and visuals make Star Wars Rebels feel 100% pure Star Wars.

The animation style takes some getting used to, but it's a nice cross between cartoonish and real-life, and the Stormtroopers in particular look fantastic. The action is also well choreographed and the space battles and shoot outs are extremely thrilling. Unlike the prequels, they're never too frantic or busy to follow and unlike the original trilogy, they're also a little more bombastic and more in line with modern sci-fi epics thanks to what they're able to acheive through special effects. It's a nice balance. The only place it ever really suffers is when some Wookees are introduced. The animation style is simply too blocky for them to look like they should and so they all end up as almost weirdly distorted LEGO figures as a result.

Going back to the vehicle and character designs, Star Wars Rebels ends up being a bit of a cross between the prequels and originals and that works for the time period that the series is set in. I hope that Star Wars Episode VII leans more towards the latter, but you can understand why this series hasn't gone in that direction. If anything, it does a solid job of further explaining the transition from one period to the next and deserves a lot of credit for doing so in a mostly subtle manner as it fills in the gaps. If you're a longtime Star Wars fan, it's hard to look at this new series without being overly cynical or critical, but bear in mind that it will serve as an introduction to a Galaxy Far, Far Away for many younger viewers and you can't deny what a wonderful job it does.

Seeing the rise of the Empire is also particularly interesting and the decision to hold The Inquisitor back for the time being (though he'll clearly have a larger role moving forward in the series) works thanks to the effective presence of the slighly ridiculously named Agent Kallus. Though it's hard to say whether or not Star Wars Rebels can remain interesting as time progresses, it certainly appears so thanks to "Spark of Rebellion"  and this special kicks it off in style and Kanan, Ezra, Zeb, Sabine and Hera are all worth sticking around for. Future episodes will have to delve deeper into their personalities though as it still feels like we're just observing these characters by the time the credits roll instead of being on the journey with them. Do I care about them as of right now? Thanks to their heroic actions and personalities, I would say yes for the most part. Did I have to Google their names for this review? Also yes. It's going to take some time before we LOVE these characters!

Star Wars Rebels is a solid start to this new series, and if it's a sign of what to come from the Disney owned Lucasfilm, we're in for a treat with any future anumated shows and the planned live-action movies. Its target audience means it might be a tad too simplicstic for some people's tastes, but the action, fun tone and likeable characters are all reason enough to follow this series.

"Though it unfortunately shares some similarities to the prequels"
Um... It has to, whether you like the prequels or not, they are official canon, so people really need to get over their pointless hatred of the prequels

Well Star Wars: Rebels has Greg Weisman as a producer who did Gargoyles, Spectacular Spider-Man, and Young Justice so it's going to be a great show. The fact that no one talks about him more is ridiculous since he is so good with the series he does.

The story was pretty good and the sound effects were awesome. The animation is too amateur-ish, the Wookies looked ridiculous. I'll be checking it out again.

I didn't like it.

I didn't like it because I found it too simplistic, too vague, with a selection of characters that appeared to be too conceived by focus-group than by good writing.

# Astromech droid with attitude? - check!

#Elder leader of the group with mysterious Jedi past - check!.

#Stand-in Chewbacca figure and bruiser of the group (Zeb - based on McQuarry's original chewbacca design) - check! (character looks ridiculous btw) - check!

#Feisty and sexy female bounty hunter figure for the Boba fanboys? - Check!
etc....

I liked the use of John William's score at key emotive points and some of the situations did touch on a more original trilogy kinda-vibe, but for the most part it just felt uninspired for the most part.

Really hoping Disney doesn't force this 'character-design-by-focus-group' vibe on JJ Abramms' new film and on the new Star Wars films.

Disney,Just go with what is traditionally 'Star Wars' and stop trying to be so f*cking trendy and clever all the time, it feels forced (no pun intended).

I'm guessing it will appeal to the under 15's who will not notice or mind the blatant drive for trendyness over traditional, and to whom scenes like the sickly sweet (pass the bucket) wookie reunion scene might appear emotion-filled and not sickly sweet cliché.

Don't even get me started on the dumb-ass laser-slingshot design. You can almost picture the eureka moment some idiot LA-based hipster broke out that badboy idea at the boardroom table. >.<

In short - what the Clone wars eventually grew into was far superior, darker, less sickly-sweet.

Three and a half outta Ten.... tops!.

I'm not sold on Space Aladdin.... err I mean 'Ezra'.

(...also, is his hair supposed to be sentient or something, what does he wash it with? - Atomoxetine ?. It's got more life to it than some of the other characters)

Nail on the head.

My favorite scene was the Jedi reveal to the Empire, though expected, was awesome all the same. That's coming from someone who doesn't care for Jedi in general. I find the military side far more interesting. Personally I would kill for a X-Wing series, ala Rogue Squadron.

The Wookies did look like ass but I enjoyed the show. It's great to be back in the classic time period. The classic sounds and seeing storm troopers run around like idiots was enough to hook me. Btw people that bitch about a children's show really need to get their priorities in check.

story was decent, but my god that dialogue was atrocious. Any time a character says something to themselves is just campy writing (i know its aimed at kids, but so was BTAS among other shows) "who is that kid?" nobody talks like that, thats all internal. Just show character action. The whole patting the thighs to relay messages during the heist was great. stuff like that, cut out the characters talking to themselves, and it was pretty solid

I found it to be a decent start to the series it was fun watch. My biggest complaint of the show was the pacing because it was almost breakneck from how quickly they were jumping from one action piece to the next. That is definitely something that needs to be worked on as the series progresses creating a steady pace for the show. I didn't find the characters too bad besides the R2-D2 wanna be with the sassy attitude and the annoying noises it made. So I would definitely watch more of this show but it needs to work on some things to make the show better.

@Grayson7954

I hate that excuse for things to be bad when people say it is for kids. Kids are much more intelligent then we give them credit for and they don't deserve to be fed crap just because they say it is for kids. There have been tons of amazing cartoon shows for kids that didn't talk down to them but talked to them. Batman TAS, Animaniacs, Gargoyles, etc... if you want a current show that doesn't talk down to children go watch Gravity Falls one of the funniest and best written cartoons on t.v. right now.

@NerdMan

I just found things happened way to quickly especially when they go after the Imperial transport ship. It goes rescue the wookies, IT'S A TRAP, oh no kid got captured, let's rescue the kid, I'm cool, RUN AWAY, hey found real wookies, let's rescue the Wookies.

One really cool thing that no one has mentioned was did anyone notice how the space battle actually felt like watching the original Star Wars. Seemed weird like they took the original footage and worked with it to make the space battles. I liked that a lot and hope to see more of that from the series.

I wasn't expecting it to be terrible or anything, but it exceeded my expectations! I've been defending the Disney purchase from the start, so it feels nice to finally kind of have my faith rewarded in a way.

I really like. It felt like old Star Wars. I'd love to see it get a bit darker as time goes by. But awesome start.

I watched the pilot last night and enjoyed it. My main gripe is that the visuals feel like a step down from Clone Wars. Something about the textures and light just doesn't seem as refined. However, the look of Clone Wars did improve over time so maybe since they're starting with a new style for this series, it will take some time for it to get to that late Clone Wars level.

Also, I am a little bit concerned about introducing two new jedi in this era who play no role in the original trilogy. I'm hoping they find some creative way to say they were involved in another part of the struggle that we didn't see rather than having them just disappear. Overall, I think it's a solid show for kids so far even if it isn't quite as strong for people older than its target demographic. I can imagine this being the Star Wars that a new generation of children most closely identifies as their own, which is cool.

OF COURSE most reviews are going to be optimistically positive because every media outlet that quasi-backed Disney's decision (this site included) to scrap the EU stuff needs to be validated. And what better way to validate an excuse for something than agreeing with the direction of the "new" stuff. SMH. Got to pad those future interviews with some positive pre-reinforcement right? "Burning bridges" and all that jazz....

What's more fascinating to me about this project is how none of the characters have OT ties. Which begs to wonder why theoretically they wouldn't be prominent in OT trilogy. I can't see Ezra/Kanan walking out of this series like Ashoka in Clone Wars (more like self-sacrifice in Force Unleashed). This series will prove interesting in the grand scheme of things I think more so than Clone Wars, since we knew the fate of most of the principle characters. Things I'd hope to see, are characters like Nien Nunb, and Clone Wars characters whose stories weren't really resolved.
