STAR WARS: Rian Johnson Confirms His Trilogy Is Still Happening Despite No Announcement From Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm shared a series of Star Wars announcements during Disney's Investor Day last year, but Rian Johnson's planned trilogy wasn't one of them. The filmmaker, however, has shared a noteworthy update!

There have been rumours (seemingly a case of wishful thinking on the part of many) that Rian Johnson's planned Star Wars trilogy has been cancelled by Lucasfilm. The Last Jedi was a hit in 2017, but also an extremely divisive film that led to the studio attempting damage control with the disastrous The Rise of Skywalker two years later.

During Disney's Investor Day last year, there was no mention of Johnson's trio of films despite the fact that they once looked set to be the next wave of Star Wars stories told by Lucasfilm following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga.

Instead, the focus has been on Disney+, with the only confirmed Star Wars films heading our way being Wonder Woman 1984 helmer Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron, and an untitled adventure from Taika Waititi, which he's expected to begin working on once he's finished shooting Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel.

Kevin Feige, meanwhile, is also producing a mystery Star Wars project for Lucasfilm.

Now, USA Today reporter Sariah Wilson has managed to confirm with Johnson that his trilogy is still in the works...it just has no concrete timeline. At this rate, that could mean we won't see it until the late 2020s, but that would undeniably leave more than enough time for The Last Jedi dust to have settled.

Yeah, probably not.

Why does he keep threatening us like this, lads?
I'm scared! :(

@Doomsday8888 -

His film was the best and most intriguing out of that entire trilogy despite its flaws. I think if managed properly and with a clear roadmap he could do something very entertaining.

Good thing we have the Star Wars TV division.

Hopefully the people in charge of the other shows live up to what Jon Favreau did.

Like seriously JJ and Rian killed people's faith in Lucas films, really think they should keep people around from those movies.

@Kyos - First time I used that gif that someone actually replies with a gif of someone raising their hand.

It being Baby Yoda makes it even better

@dracula - I just had to look if there was a fitting Star Wars gif. ^^

If his trilogy is isolated enough from everything else it could be good. After watching Knives Out I can safely say he's a good director. Just don't let him near established characters.

Just don't watch his movie - simple as that. If you hate the director and you don't want another film series from him, don't watch it even if he makes it. Make it flop and Disney will stick to the Star Wars TV show division and maybe you'll get a few good seasons before that gets infested with the same things that made you hate the new trilogy.

@Scarilian - Don't watch a new Star Wars film? Are you insane?!

@GwenLantern - That's what I might have said a few years ago, too. Now I've not watched the last two new Star Wars movies, and it's absolutely fine.

@Kyos - You mean you've not paid to see them or you've literally not seen them? The final two episodes in the Star Wars Saga and you just skipped them? I mean, yeah they are shitty, bad, bad movies. Infuriatingly terrible. They will give any Star Wars fan a mental episode every 5 minutes, but... Well they are the official ending to the whole saga. You don't even wanna see how bad they are?

@GwenLantern - I mean, it’s ultimately HIS time that he’s gonna be spending doing a particular thing. He can choose what he wants to and doesn’t want to spend his time on.

@GwenLantern - Literally not seen them. Although I meant Solo and Episode IX, not TLJ and Ep IX. After the experience with TLJ I decided not to subject myself to further pain and disappointment, so I skipped Ep IX. Also Solo, which... well, it's Solo. I could hardly care less.

@Kyos - Can't say I blame you. I personally wouldn't be able to resist even the most critically panned Star Wars movie. But you really haven't missed anything worthwhile, tbh.

If his trilogy doesn’t happen, he’s still gathered enough clout from TLJ and Knives Out to where he can pretty much make whatever he wants.

If his trilogy does happen, he’ll likely bring a lot more new stuff to the universe now that he’s not tied to dealing with legacy characters, and the annoying zealot section of the fanbase will continue to be perpetually miserable.

So pretty much a win/win scenario.
