STAR WARS Story Head Tells Fans To Calm Down Over Continuity As "It's All Fake Anyway"

Matt Martin is a Creative Executive in the Lucasfilm Story Group, and he's told fans who've been fretting about continuity and what's canon to calm down because Star Wars is "all fake anyway"!

If you're a fanboy, then continuity is probably important to you. With the Star Wars franchise, keeping up with that is often easier said than done, especially after decades' worth of Expanded Universe stories were thrown out when Disney got their hands on the franchise.

Over the past few years, there's been a definite blurring of the lines in this Galaxy Far, Far Away, with certain stories and characters from the EU brought into the Disney "canon."

However, if you listen to Lucasfilm Story Group Creative Executive Matt Martin, continuity and canon might not matter. In fact, he's told fans that they need to take a chill pill because, "It’s all fake anyway so you can choose to accept whatever you want as part of the story."

"So to summarize: there is a reason that we need to internally know what is and isn’t canon so we can keep our line of official storytelling as aligned as possible but that doesn’t mean fans can’t individually pick and choose what they want to accept as true," Martin said before dropping the "F" word to his social media followers a few days back.

It's an understandable point, but not one that's going to help ease the minds of continuity-obsessed fans. It probably doesn't reflect how Disney and Lucasfilm view things, either.

That is not something Star Wars fans want to hear. You need to at least pretend it is important.

@LaserKing - dude couldn’t even indulge fans. That’s how you know they’re so ticked off over there lol.

@LaserKing - he doesn't say it's not important. He was replying to someone who asked if they can change something that hasn't been put into canon yet.

He says, yes; find a way to enjoy this entertainment that our business has created. There is no right way for someone to enjoy a fictional franchise.

In the same breath he states they (Lucasfilm) have a clear 'canon' they use. If someone wants to use that, then that's cool too.

They dont want to limit people's enjoyment of a fictional universe. Discouraging those who want to use headcanon would be rejecting their custom (and potential $).

This article is crafted to evoke a negative reaction as the 'reporter' knows negativity gets more clicks. Looking at the tweets/conversation rationally rather than negatively would help

To some extent that is true; its a great thing that fans are basically free to make their own headcanon.

On the other hand, it's not a good look to basically say "it's not real" when defending a story.

The Lucasfilm Story Group is a joke anyway, nobody is actually qualified to be there. How many of them have actually written Star Wars stories? Some of them are the guys who ordered stock for Lucasfilm. Zero experience with actual storytelling.

I just checked - the guy who tweeted this is a perfect example of what I was talking about. He used to be a social media manager for the Star Wars brand. How that qualifies him to be on the story group is beyond me.

@Nightwing1015 - Yeah, this all makes a lot of sense now how we got the last two films. With people in charge who care this little about how their own fans perceive them, imagine the "closed door" talk between the executives and comments to their employees.

@Nightwing1015 - he wasn't defending the story, though. Someone asked him if they (the reader) can change an event which hadn't been put into canon yet.

If someone had asked him to defend canon stories I'm 100% confident he would of said something different.

@Rufio - Yes that it true. I didn't actually word my second sentence properly and I'd take it out if I could.

All fiction in all of recorded history is 'fake', but if people took his advice the arts would be a disaster mash of uneven storytelling, massive continuity errors, and loopholes that could tie knots round the moon. He should consider being silent for a while.

That's like an executive at Pepsi or Coke saying "it's all sugar water anyways, so drink it and shut up."

Fake or not. For over 40 years fans invested in it. This guy is a dick.

@blitzkreg - and saying something doesnt matter because its fake is a pretty stupid defense against criticism, by that logic, people cant criticize anything in film, television, comics and literature
dracula
dracula - 5/12/2020, 2:37 PM
Thats the problem, the people working on these movies dont care. “None of it is real”

By that logic you can do whatever the hell you want with any property and you cant be criticized for it.

@dracula - Exactly, if this is the stance you take, then don't pretend there are "episodes" or sagas, or a shared history to your films, TV shows, video games, comic books, and novels.

Wow, this is disrespectful to fans IMO. I get fans can be annoying and they want to nitpick every detail, but that's the name of the game in these franchises.
