STAR WARS: Taika Waititi Isn't Looking To Focus On Legacy Characters Like "Chewbacca's Grandmother"

Director Taika Waititi is set to take the helm of a Star Wars movie once Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder is released, but the filmmaker isn't looking to focus on any familiar heroes or villains.

With Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron sidelined for whatever reason, Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie is believed to be up next for Lucasfilm. While the expectation is that it will arrive in theaters next year, 2024 seems more realistic, and that will mean a half-decade gap between big screen Star Wars stories (with the last being The Rise of Skywalker).

Little to nothing has been revealed about the project, though Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy did recently say the studio is looking to "create a whole new saga" moving forward.

Total Film (via SFFGazette.com) asked Waititi if that's a sentiment he agrees with during a recent interview about his role in Lightyear, and the filmmaker was quick to confirm that he is indeed looking to do something new with the franchise. "I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand," he explains. "I don't think that I'm any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that's Chewbacca's grandmother.'"

"That all stands alone, that's great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story."

So, Waititi isn't looking to head down the route of Rogue One or Solo, movies that filled in very specific gaps in this Galaxy Far, Far Away's history (with a lot of familiar faces). The writer and director has spent some time in the world of The Mandalorian both behind and in front of the camera, but we'd bet on his movie taking place in its own, unexplored part of the timeline.

Time will tell what (or when) that is, but moving away from the Skywalker Saga isn't necessarily a bad thing. Obi-Wan Kenobi has proven that there are still stories to tell during that period, but it would be interesting to see this Galaxy expand in other ways (similar to how The High Republic era looks set to take us to a time of the Jedi hundreds of years before The Phantom Menace).

Hopefully, some concrete details about this Star Wars movie will be revealed in due course! You'll want to stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for the latest.

Thank Christ. I've had to watch so much shit focusing on the same characters and planets over and over and over and over and over and over and over again that they truly don't feel special anymore. I'd love to follow brand-new characters and visit brand-new places in the Star Wars world without any cameos or cutesy references crowbarred in.

@MUTO123 - I would actually like both.. I can’t say I wasn’t extremely excited watching Rogue One, or that I didn’t burst with happiness at things in The Mandalorian or Obi-Wan, but at the same time I’d love some original stories. This Taika Waititi film has me excited because of that as well as The Acolyte which is set in a time period where only Yoda would be alive.

@JohnCastillo - Makes me sad and happy. There's a reality out there where Waititi and Filoni are working closely together. Also, would yoda even be "yoda' at this point? That would be interesting to see where is at that point in life.

@The1st - Well Yoda’s already a well established Jedi in that time period, he might not have been the Grand Master of the Jedi Council yet but he might still have been a Jedi Master in the council. I doubt we’d see him though.

@MUTO123 - haven't read the book either, but it kinda reminds me of Dreamfall as well.

Definitely sounds interesting, and has a solid cast too

Totally right. Reminded me of RedLetterMedia's Solo predictions.

Origins for the name, the gun, the ship, the vest, the.....

I admit I lost almost all interest in Disney SW content cause so far it's very derivative, and IMHO Mando S1 is the only really GOOOOD thing they made so far precisely cause it wasn't really connected to the more traditional SW themes.

I have seen the term brought up quite a few times now, but I admit I have no idea what it really means. So, my questions now is: what exactly is a legacy character?

Also, I kinda doubt we'll get this movie anytime soon, if at all.

@bkmeijer1 - A legacy character is one that inherits the identity (title, persona) of another older/established character, usually has a mentor-mentee kind of relationship or inspires a rando to take up the cause. Some examples would be The Dread Pirate Roberts, X-23 taking Wolverine's name, and whoever is standing closest to Bruce Wayne at the time.

Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Rarely memorable, never sticks.
