STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Looks Set To Match THE LAST JEDI With $450M Global Opening

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to blast into theaters everywhere this Thursday (there are midnight screenings in several locations tomorrow), and the latest box office projections suggest a very impressive global opening for the J.J. Abrams-directed adventure.

The final installment in the Skywalker Saga is expected to take in $450 million worldwide over the course of its first weekend on release. This is about on par with what Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi made back in 2017, but still quite a bit behind The Force Awakens' mighty $528.9M from 2015.

The initial reactions to The Rise of Skywalker have been mixed-positive so far, but, as is often the case, the full reviews are expected to skew more towards the negative end of the spectrum.

The embargo lifts in the wee hours, so be sure to check back in the morning for our review. In the meantime, you can have another look over the social media reactions by clicking the "view list" button below.

Hopefully they give Star Wars a good break, 5 to 10 years. Hopefully they don't [frick] up Indiana Jones.

Watching it on Saturday in IMAX. Honestly I'm more hyped for the Tenet Prologue attached to this then this flick. I don't consider this new trilogy canon. My boy Anakin ain't even in this lol.

New batch of reactions were really negative. Dan Murrell just tweeted out "Yikes. #TheRiseOfSkywalker". Sounds like Chris Terrio's done it again!

@NotoriousWolf23 - Murrell's my favorite Youtube movie critic by far. Always love hearing his takes on movies.

@soberchimera - Chris Terrio was the mastermind behind "Martha..." and then got given the keys to end the nine-film Star Wars franchise. Wonder what big opportunity he'll get next. Star Trek? Lord of the Rings? A GOT prequel?

@soberchimera - after this we might have

This no fantasy...no careless product of wild imagination. No, my good friends. These indictments that I have brought you today...the specific charges listed herein against the individual...his acts of failure, his ultimate aim of neglect. (lifts up his crystal staff) These are matters of undeniable fact. I ask you now to pronounce judgment on those accused: Chris Terrio, charged with maintaining and deliver an adept script for BvS and Rise of Skywalker - chief architect and author of this insidious plot, to destroy the ending of a trilogy.

@regularmovieguy - Two Lost co-creators had finales to the sequel sagas of works that shaped and defined them as artists from a very young age. One of them ended one of the best TV seasons of the last few years perfectly. The other....

@BlackBeltJones - I just dont understand why they haven't drawn more from the EU to help this new Sequel Trilogy. There's so much source material to pick and choose what you want and what you don't want (i.e. Thrawn, which they brought back for Rebels).

They just had no plan for the ending of this new trilogy. And it shows.

@L0RDbuckethead - pride or jealousy I guess. Have your pick. Kathleen and company thought they could do better. Everything you needed was right there. The EU was a beautiful guide.

But when they actually realize what a grand and difficult undertaking it would be it was too late. They bet on their creativity and ingenuity and it backfired BIG TIME.

But-

The Mandalorian shows if you put your trust in the right creatives, things can work. The team assembled there works. Feels like Kennedy stepped aside and eat Favreau and his team go to work. Maybe he should get it on the films and a a few of those other directors too.

@BlackBeltJones - you make a good point about the EU stuff. It is quite a lot to digest and properly take on.

I agree with pretty much everything you said here as well. Maybe they should slowly diminish Kennedy's role behind the scenes and promote Favreau to a larger role?

@L0RDbuckethead - Apparently Kennedy didn't know the EU existed.
