Director Rian Johnson is currently doing the press rounds for
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but naturally he's been asked about the newly announced spin-off trilogy he's been tasked with overseeing. Despite what you would imagine to be looming pressure over having to create an entirely brand new story-arc in the
Star Wars franchise, Johnson actually reiterated he's excited about the complete freedom he has.
"Right now there's all the freedom in the world," he told IGN.
"That's the whole thing that's exciting to me is let's go some new places, let's meet some new folks, let's see what else is out there. Let's have one story told over three films in this galaxy with no limitations. It's pretty exciting."
Obviously, it's far too early for any specific details, but Johnson's new trilogy is said to be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga. The trilogy is expected to introduce
"new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored."
Johnson's statement to IGN echo
previous comments made last month when he praised
"the idea of doing a new story on the big canvas of three movies in this world."
As for how this project came about, Johnson told IGN,
"We all just had a really good time working together. I know for us, that was a big part of it. We were getting to the end of it and Kathy Kennedy and Bob Iger and Alan Horn, Alan Berkman, all the folks at Disney, we were just sad that this was coming to an end. We were like, 'How do we figure out some way to keep working together?' That's when I pitched the idea of a new trilogy with a new story. That seemed really exciting for me."
Unfortunately, it'll probably be quite a while before we get our first glimpse into Johnson's galaxy far, far away. After the release of
The Last Jedi, there's
Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018, followed by
Star Wars: Episode IX (directed by J.J. Abrams) in 2019.
Are you excited for Johnson's
Star Wars spin-off trilogy?
