Rian Johnson Breaking The Mold For STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

Rian Johnson Breaking The Mold For STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

Long-time Star Wars scribe Lawrence Kasdan and Episode VIII co-star Oscar Isaac both agree that Rian Johnson is venturing into previously uncharted territory for the sequel to The Force Awakens.

With films like Brick and Looper under his belt, fans were naturally very excited to see what Rian Johnson would bring to the Star Wars universe.  According to Lawrence Kasdan and Oscar Isaac, Rian won't disappoint.  "Rian Johnson is a friend of mine — he's going to make some weird thing," said Kasdan to The LA Times.  He continued, "If you've seen Rian's work, you know it's not going be like anything that's ever been in Star Wars."

Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac added, "I would agree with [Kasdan].  Rian is definitely going to places and investigating things that haven’t really been done in the Star Wars universe. For me, it’s so fun getting to explore different things that I wouldn’t have expected in this universe.  In some ways, it feels like we’re making an independent film. Certain things we get to play with – this kind of intimacy that we get to find – it's special. It’s been really fun."

For those who thought The Force Awakens was essentially just a remake of A New Hope, this is definitely good news.  However,  stepping outside of the traditional Star Wars storytelling formula was something attempted by the prequels and that failed miserably.  Will Johnson truly be able to deliver a unique Star Wars experience? We'll have to wait until December 17, 2017 to find out.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is an upcoming sci-fi, space opera from Lucafilm and Walt Disney.  Rian Johson directs from script he also wrote.  The film stars Daisy Ridley, Oscar Issac, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.  Principal photography began at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom in February 2016.  Rian Johnson is also writing the script for Episode IX but will relinquish the director's chair to Jurassic World's  Colin Trevorrow.

The reason prequels suck is not because it "steps outside of the traditional", but because Lucas recon lore that was established. Also the film in general were just, not good. From acting to dialogue etc.

@Shanksman - Agreed the world building and beautiful new environments and architecture and fight scenes were an improvement on the the original trilogy and something I wanted in VII, even if overall the prequel trilogy was much worse.

@Elayem - beautiful yes, but illogical. Tech in the prequels better? R2d2 can fly? That would have come in handy on the barge in .rotj.

@ChewyLewis - Yeah I mean the prequels were shitty, all Im saying is I would love more world-building, new abstract alien environments, architecture, fight scenes and technology in the sequel trilogy, where it makes sense

@Elayem - Yeah I get what you mean. To be real, everything we saw in The Force Awakens we've seen them in the original trilogy. (except tri-saber, maybe) Its a well made movie but almost nothing new and refreshing, its like it was made for the fans who only want things eerily similar to the originals.

I hope he doesn't pull some stupid shit like turning a character gay for the sake of diversity

Not sure what this means. Obviously we want new, but you have to stick to the formula. If you get too weird, people won't like it.

I just spent about a half hour typing and deleting my thoughts on the possibility of introducing (or revealing) gay characters in Star Wars. I'll let someone else do the deed first.

LOL. So looks like Poe and Finn will be....partners. Nice to know.

I hope I'm wrong-but after Ep 8 comes out I think I'm going to love Ep 7 more and how much it mirrors the Ep 4 (the originals).
