Kevin Smith Shares His Thoughts On Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World!

The comic book writer and director discusses how he felt about the movie, Michale Cera and Edgar Wright...

"That movie is great," Smith told The Film Stage. "It's spellbinding and nobody is going to understand what the [frick] just hit them. I would be hard-pressed to say, 'he's bringing a comic book to life!' but he is bringing a comic book to life."

The director went on to praise the film's cast and in particular Scott Pilgrim himself, "Michael Cera is really great. He's also doing something that's different from what most people know him as in terms of the character. He's a little more self assured and Bugs Bunny-like than George Michael from 'Arrested Development'."

It wasnt just the actors' work that Smith enjoyed. He also revealed that he's a big fan of the films director Edgar Wright, "I think Edgar is just kind of leaps ahead of the rest of us. He's the goods and if someone said, 'you gotta pick one guy and you'd have to watch only his movies for the rest of your life,' I'd pick Edgar. He's done no wrong, as far as I'm concerned."

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is now set for an August 13th release world wide.

Superdog- Yeah Copout looks really really bad after watching a few trailers of it. The first one was cool and all but after a short while it gets really REALLY old. And the new trailers brought the same tired shtick. I've never been a fan of Smith's directing. I like his stand up though. He's a cool guy but a better writer than director IMO.

As for this comic... WHAT THE [frick] IS IT?!?!?!? Never heard of it... at all. What's it about? Is it a cartoon? To what age range is it geared? I literally know nothing about it.

I must confess I've never read the book either. My ignorance of it leads me to believe its geared towards teens or girls. Am I wrong? Regardless of what I think I've heard ringing endorsements from alot of people.

its a bit more than that though multi like i love this because scott reminds me a lil bit of me. I own volumes 1 thru 5 and love them all! but he has taken way to long to bring out 6 i think its been like 3 yrs. But i was scared when they said michael cera cuz his passive george michael character he always plays wont work with this. but kevin smith has reassured me :] great stuff

Multi- ....that ....sounds .....retarded. And if the art is the same as the powerpuff girls, like the above pic... it's not for me. I mean, i enjoy the odd paper art cartoon every now and then, in fact i'm a HUGE fan of Atomic Betty, but this really doesn't tickle my fancy.

Set2Fallfirst- Is anything Multi stated, false in any way? Cause if not, it's really not interesting. To each's own but... i dunno. Ain't for me. So he goes off kicking every ex-boyfriend's ass and acquires experience coins from them. It uh... lacks... "grit".
Shaman
Shaman - 3/4/2010, 10:23 AM
I love black and white art... but not for kiddy concepts. The "noir" concept better fits adult books IMO. So that's strike: dos.

Woah... after seeing your updated pic in your comment, i have to say... AH HHHHHHHHEEEEELLLLL NAWH. Pass.

...THERE'S A FREAKIN' MOVIE MADE ABOUT THIS?!?!?!?!? Someone crack a whip at Cameron to bring us ALITA already!!! *cough* cast Ellen Page as Gally *cough* *cough*
Shaman
Shaman - 3/4/2010, 10:28 AM
Yes it is lazy! I mean... does it at least come out in thick manga forms??? Or is it just regular comic book form? Cause there's no excuse for the lack of color if it's a regular monthly comic (unless it was a "heavy noir" adult book).
Shaman
Shaman - 3/4/2010, 10:43 AM
Well, i guess it explains the lack of color but still. It's just not for me and the concept in itself doesn't warrant a full movie IMO. It could better fit a tv show but then again, it's the story of a guy that beats up every ex boyfriend of this girl he's interested in for the only reason of... "because". That falls flat on it's face, in front of me.

Actually, i haven't been into comics for quite a while so i wasn't even aware that they were making a Marvel Noir Series! That sounds AWESOME!!! And a "Spawn like" adult noir type tv series would be stellar!!! I agree, a series of animated flicks would even be better :))

I'm a huge fan of this "noir" semi animated film called Renaissance!!! Have you seen it??? It's AWESOME!!! I love the english voice acting in it!!! You should definitely check it out :)

@ Shaman and Multi

Artwork aside it's really not for kids, the story has way to many NeS and SNES Refrences that a lot of Kids wouldn't get it's meant for the late 20's Early 30's Video Game/Comic/Manga Geeks. I mean definitely not for everyone, but the over all feel of the comic reminds me of the 90's and I loved the 90's. If you weren't apart of the NES and SNES generation, or just not that into Classic Video Games/Anime it won't be for you.

ScottScottScott - 3/4/2010, 12:13 PM
But are you a Vintage Video Game Geek like the target audience for this book is?

Even if you are. Like I said it won't be for everyone. ;)

I will admit I bought Vol. 1 shortly after it was released on a friends recommendation, it took me almost 6 months to actually read it because the art is off putting. But once I finally did I had a bunch of laugh out loud moments and fell in love with the story. Not trying to make you like it or change your mind on it. Just my P.o.V on the book.
Shaman
Shaman - 3/4/2010, 12:18 PM
thwhtGuardian- TOTALLY!!!! SO GLAD I'M NOT ALONE ON THIS!!! And even the story had me goin' till the end even though it's nothing revolutionary :))

@Skot888- I'm in that exact age range and i still own and play my NES as well as my SNES. In fact, my favorite game on my SNES is NINJA WARRIORS. But the book still doesn't have anything appealing. The plot really sucks. If there was more to the character than just... "what he does", i could deal with the shitty art. I really don't see what so appealing about it to even warrant a feature film made of it. Feel free to enlighten us though, cause i haven't read it at all. I could be missing the whole show. But if it's only about whatever was already discussed on this page, it really has nothing for me.

After reading your last comment, i guess the bulk of the show has to do with skit referencing of old video games then. Which could be cool, depending on how it's done. I might check it out eventually. I guess if i'm not hooked on the first book, i won't be later on though... right?

@shaman and Multi You were right its nothing special and your dog crap reference is actually a good explanation. BUT it still makes me giggle :] Yea shaman you wouldnt really be into it. But hey at least michael cera will be more than awkwardly semi funny. hopefully

@Shaman

If you're looking for in-depth story it's not there. It is good for some Laughs and Giggles. There are a ton of random Video Game references and it pokes fun at a lot of Pop-Culture and Sub Cultures, such as in Volume 3, Scott has to face one of Romona's (The Girl he likes) Ex's that are in a band with one of his Ex's, But Romona's Ex is a vegan so he has weird psychic Powers because of this (it's funnier than it sounds.) there ends up being a hilarious bass battle, and Ramona at one point starts beating on Scott's Ex with a Hammer with +20 Against Girls.

So if you're looking for some cheap laughs with semi relatable material you'll end up enjoying past the crappy art. You won't think the book is the greatest thing ever, but I think you'll see why it'll probably make for a funny and enjoyable movie.
Shaman
Shaman - 3/4/2010, 1:02 PM
Set & Skot- Well if it's for cheep laughs then it could be entertaining. I just hope for all fans' sake that the movie is anything like the comic. Sounds to me like it could be a hard concept to adapt. But Smith seems exstatic about it... you never know. Thanks for the info guys, i was really oblivious to it ;)

Ugh, after seeing the art style in the picture MULTI posted above I think I'll give the graphic novel a miss! I'll wait until a trailer before I decide whether to go and check this out at the cinema though!

RENAISSANCE is crap. I'm sick of 3D animation and their dead faces.
Shaman
Shaman - 3/5/2010, 6:49 AM
I'll have to take part of the blame on that, Ror. When Kevin Smith comes to Canada, they have to call the police to pry him out of Tim Hortons. Not the guy... the coffe place. It's open 24/7, has fresh great tasting food and has the best coffee in the world. I'm really not making this up. Everyone that's had Tim Hortons coffee can't get enough of it. I think they put crack in it or something...

So yeah, sorry Kev. You're Fat. But then again... so am i. Not as much as you but... ya know LOL ;P

Betty- Really??? You didn't like it??? Awwwww...

lol, I admit the style is nice. But that's all it had, style. It has the same inarticulate hands and dead faces of sub-par 3D animation. And dry, terrible dialogue. I admit I am kind of attacking it but I have to back up my previous statement. I have to put my money where my ass is, or something like that.
