SHANG-CHI & THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS Concept Art Features The Demonic Dweller In Darkness

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been playing in theaters for a couple of weeks, and Marvel Studios has slowly begun to reveal more of the MCU adventure's secrets. Now, concept artist Jarad Marantz has shared his design for a creature who turned out to be the real villain of the movie, the monstrous Dweller in Darkness.

This dragon-like beast could be glimpsed in some of the later TV spots, but this marks our best look yet at the evil soul-sucker. In his post, Marantz reveals that Marvel usually asks him to dial-back his scarier designs a little, so he was surprised that this "terrifying" take on the Dweller in Darkness was left untouched.

"My favorite elements of the design are the many tales/tendrils coming off of his back and wings. I knew that the creature would be too large to have any real interaction with the human characters if he didn’t have something that he could actually used to fight them. I was looking at a lot of Chinese Kites for inspiration there, trying to tie in some cultural element to the design."

Towards the end of Shang-Chi, it's revealed that this demonic dragon has been posing as Wenwu's late wife in order to lure the warlord to the mystical land of Ta Lo and trick him into using the power of the ten rings to set him and his minions free. The Dweller does manage to escape, but the Master of Martial arts then uses the rings to destroy him and avert the threat to his mother's people.

Part of me thought this would be a precursor to the Deviants in Eternals.

I'm pretty torn on the Dweller in Darkness and the third act of the film. Really felt the central conflict needed to remain between Wenwu and his children, but the inclusion of essentially Kaiju in a Marvel movie was a surprise and an enjoyable one. Wish they found a way to include this better in the film.

This will tie into Strange somehow. Dweller is a Strange villain and a Cthulhu monster.

Ta Lo is a nexus in the comics multiverse too.

I loved the third act in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

When people said Shang Chi "devolved into a typical CG 3rd act" I was not prepared for the movie to pretty much become Dragon Ball Z mixed with Final Fantasy, and somehow also pay off all the family drama in the space of 10 minutes.

By the time Shang was full speed running beside a dragon I was already ready to pay for a ticket to the sequel

@OmegaDaGrodd - It was fricking awesome. It had fantasy and heart with the fight with his father.

I love seeing a comic come to life on screen and that's what I got.

Ngl, wasn't a huge fan of the Godzilla-esque final battle at the end. Too much going on and too dark to see what's happening.

CGI was great tho.

@mrbrownvp1 - I think Fin Fang Foom will be the villain of the second film. The rings were signaling something or someone and in the comics the rings were found on Fin Fang Foom's ship.
