SHAZAM! Director Says Shifting Strategy For The DC Film Universe Didn't Affect The Film

The cast of Warner Bros.' Shazam! recently sat down with SYFY Wire to discuss the film and the wider world of the DC Film Universe and comic books. In its early stages, the DC Films Universe sought to establish as large, interconnected universe similar to Marvel Studios, but after a number of struggles, the studio decided that they would return to their previous formula of making standalone superhero projects while still maintaining a small degree of fluidity across certain films.

In the interview below, director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran respond to a question of whether the change in strategy at WB altered the development of Shazam!, which started shooting in the Summer of 2017, just before the release of Justice League in November.

"No, because we always wanted to just focus on telling [Shazam's] story.  There was never any mandate to set things up for the future or incorporate certain things, it was just [to] make the best Shazam! movie.  And then, since it's set in the world of DC, we could peek out and put in all these references and easter eggs and make it feel that it really is in that universe while still being its own story."

After being lucky enough to see Shazam! thanks to Fandango's early screening on March 23, I can confirm that WB has a winner on their hands and that Shazam! should prove to be another success for the studio, following the surprise of Aquaman's strong box office run.

Like I love comic book films. You all know this but there’s just so much I love. I think it’s the closest film since the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films to hit that tone with the comedy, horror, fun, & directing.

The only issues I have with Shazam is there are some CGI problems & I do wish we had more of Pedro & Eugene since they are the foster kids that got the least screen time but I still loved the film

I think a great deal why I loved it is the small scale aspect. I do love big huge scale action but I feel like the genre relies to heavily on huge climaxes

Spider-Man 1 is just Spider-Man saving MJ & a group of kids
Spider-Man 2 is just Spider-Man & Doc Ock in a shitty warehouse
Even Spider-Man 3 is just Sandman & Venom teaming up to kill Spider-Man at a construction site
The Dark Knight is Batman fighting cops, Joker’s goons, Joker, & dogs while trying to make sure nobody gets killed or dies & then he tries to save Gordon & his family from Dent
Logan is just Wolverine saving a group of kids in the woods
Civil War is just Cap & Bucky fighting Tony in some Nazi bass while T’Challa talks with Zemo on some mountain
Homecoming has Spider-Man getting his butt kicked on a beach by Batman

I’m not saying huge climaxes are a bad thing. There is plenty of action in the climax of Shazam but it feels so small. You don’t have the world ending or a city being destroyed.

Shazam is just such a great film. Like I went in expecting it to at least be good but it’s more than that for me. It’s great

This strategy seems to be working for them so far. They might have found their footing with it.
