'SPAWN' Creator Finishes Screenplay; Wants to Direct Reboot

It appears as though after years of claiming to have created a screenplay for a reboot of his creation on the big screen, Comic Legend Todd McFarlane has finally finished his screenplay and wants to direct as well! See more past the jump!

After years of talking up the screenplay for his adaptation of his creation, Spawn, Todd McFarlane has finally finished it, saying:

“I’ve finished the script, and I’m in the process of editing. It’s 183 pages, and [producers] usually like 120. I still think it’s going to end up being about 140, because I’m putting in details for myself.”

McFarlane is looking to direct the film himself and wants to keep the film at a modest budget stating: I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they'll let me direct it! While mentioning that he's hoping to start production in 2016: I need to get him back up on the big screen again to make him relevant in a big way, which we will do. If McFarland wants to make this a possibly, I think going the way of Deadpool with a hard-R and $50 mil+ budget would make the prospect of a reboot a reality seeing as Deadpool is killing it at the box office.

The only thing now is, who would produce the film? What studio would be willing to distribute the film, and what actor do you see portraying Spawn himself?

What do you think of McFarland writing the screenplay and lobbying to direct? Sounds off below!

Errr, I don't know about him directing. Why not leave it to the professionals? Give Spawn to someone like Zack Snyder or Guillermo Del Toro.

@DeusExSponge - I always felt that McFarlane's ego got in the way of Spawn being a successful property outside of comic books. A good example of this would be the HBO Spawn animated series. I loved that series, as short-lived and unfocused as it could be at times. But McFarlane's apparent insistence that each episode begin with a monologue from himself that ultimately had little or nothing to do with the episode itself or the series as a whole, hurt the series chances of catching on. I loved the tone and feel of the intro and then BAM, any momentum or suspense was thwarted when Todd had to go on his rant about choices or what not.

A dark fantasy Spawn would work as long as you get a good director.

I don't believe any studio has the right to this, its all McFarland.

Wasn't he trying to self finance this a few years ago?

Spawn is so the 1990s. Wow, we've come a long way.

Try Sony, they seem to like dealing with bottom of the barrel comic book properties outside of Spider-Man (come on everyone, get "hyped" for the Valiant Comics Cinematic Universe).

This movie will never happen. A Spawn film and new Spawn cartoon has been in development hell longer than the Deadpool film. McFarlane is too busy making money off toys with licenses like NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, Assassin's Creed, Halo, Walking Dead, and now Gears of War to be bother to make money off his creations. The difference between Spawn and Hellboy is Mignola actually created a great backstory and focuses on story and art while McFarlane only cared about art which is why the Spawn comics story where shit.

In the end, this film will never happen. McFarlane will never take time to direct a film. Spawn is a shit character anyway. I loved how Todd killed him off and tried to hype the return of the OG Spawn last year in comics and nobody gave a shit about it lol
