Yesterday, we learned that the wall-crawler’s iconic Spider-Sense would be referred to as the “Peter Tingle” in Spider-Man: Far From Home. And while we didn’t know how this moment would play out in the movie, it managed to cause a bit of a stir among comic book fans.

Fortunately, some amusing new footage from the upcoming Marvel film reveals the unexpected origin of the "Peter Tingle."

As seen in the TV spot below, Aunt May first coins the term during a funny exchange that occurs after the young hero fails to dodge a healthy snack that was thrown his way. The footage seems to confirm that the mildly controversial name for Spider-Man’s power is meant to be nothing more than a small joke that pokes some fun at one of the web-head’s greatest abilities.

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 2nd and features a talented cast that includes stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marisa Tomei, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, and Jacob Batalon.

No issue with the joke, in theory, but the entire scene is badly done.

Why did she throw the bannana? She knows he has Spider Sense and would dodge it rendering throwing it pointless

Why did Peter not dodge it? So that she can make a comment on the Spider Sense that she could have easily made with him dodging

Why does she act all jokey? She just realised that his Spider Sense does not work constantly meaning he is more likely to get shot and yet she treats it as something humourous and makes the 'Peter Tingle' remark. No Aunt May would ever act that way.

Rewriting the scene, just have them talking about an earlier fight scene and have her think of the silly name for his ability. Play it off as her trying to cheer him up and joke with him, especially considering she'd be able to tell he was feeling down about Tony's passing.

Wait... so its clearly a joke, yet everyone was reporting yesterday that its "100% the MCU's version of the Spider Sense"...

Very hot take: I don't think Raimi's Aunt May was a great character. TASM Aunt May was better for me even, and I like MCU Aunt May well enough too.

@DnA - I'm not actually sure that Aunt May is all that great a character in the comics. She's most effective when she's a prop for Peter's social responsibilities, but when her character has real agency, I'm not sure it really adds much to the story itself. (Not that I'm saying they should just ditch her or something, usually it's best to just leave institutions intact.)

But TASM May, PS4 May, and MCU May may be better characters in general, but they are all worlds away from the original intent of the character (Raimi got that right). Long way of saying I don't have a solution for this problem (that may not be a problem for anyone other than me).

@DnA - I didn't care for Raimi's Aunt May either. She was just mean. Same with Webb's take.

I like this one tho. And not because she's a good character or anything, lol.

@Spock0Clock - Ultimate comics Aunt May is definitely my favorite rendition of the character. Gwen living with them definitely added to it with their relationship:

@AbidNaga - Again, I think it's a "better" character, in the sense that she is more layered, interesting, and has more agency. But She's not really occupying that same role that Original Recipe May did.

Original May is totally 100% realistic. There are women out there who are lovely and gentle and generous and sickly and overwhelmed by life. Not every fictional character has to be strong, or smart, or sharp, or witty, and OG Aunt May isn't any of those things. She is a tragic figure, largely, and she is capable of some heartwarming moments, too. To me, that's sort of fundamental to Aunt May, and was missing in Ultimates (though, I think it's present in all of the other major media versions to some degree). Bendis made her into Bea Arthur.

Bea Arthur is awesome. But she's not Aunt May.

(I didn't mean to imply other versions of May aren't realistic. I just meant that it's still worthwhile to see characters who don't fit easy modern narrative conventions operating in these characters' worlds.)

It's easy to make May a modern competent and occasionally hard-nosed self-possessed older woman. You do that, and she can have a good scene or two, and still be irrelevant to the plot and everything is fine.

What's hard is dealing with the fact that a superhero has a sickly older relative who isn't getting any better. Someone who needs his help, but can't offer much in return. Doing that as a part of a broader superhero story is a major challenge without falling into the snarl of cliches that Spider-Man comics did for 30 years.

Which is it, @Spock0Clock? Is Aunt May a good character or a bad one?

...I don't know, is my point. If you made Spider-Man today, you wouldn't create a character like that. But it's in that very narrative inefficiency that I think she's most charming.

@DnA -
I am starting to question if people actually paid attention to the character portrayals.

Raimi's Aunt May was a normal Aunt, she had troubles of her own and acted responsibly when encountering them.

TASM's Aunt May was an unlikable character who was constantly distant from Peter even when he needed her most.

MCU's Aunt May exists solely for jokes.

Thank you Marvel Studios for giving us the origin story of the Spider-Man's famous phrase !

@DoubleD -
I get that you want to try and fight off a bunch of people who dislike the term, but please dont try to BS it into being something grand or say some other nonsense about it being an origin story.

He's had the Spider Sense earlier than this film. He likely has even named it as such. 'Tingling' is a common sensation people have and just because Aunt May made a joke, does not mean that it's the origin of the phrase even in the MCU.

At the end of the day comedy is subjective and different types of comedy appeal to different people - if people like/dislike the joke then that's fine. It can be argued regarding the set-up of the joke and its execution, but it's something where not every brand of humour appeals to everyone.
