EL MUERTO: Bad Bunny Confirms He's No Longer Part Of Sony's Planned SPIDER-MAN Spin-Off

After the movie lost its release date earlier this summer, El Muerto star Bad Bunny has confirmed he's no longer attached to the project but plays oddly coy when asked exactly what happened. Check it out!

When Sony Pictures revealed plans for an El Muerto movie during its 2022 CinemaCon presentation, the vast majority of fans were left scratching their heads. For starters, he's an incredibly obscure character and way down the list of Spider-Man-adjacent heroes and villains comic book readers want to see on screen.

It's widely believed Sony gave popular rapper and aspiring actor Bad Bunny his pick of characters from their Spider-Man Universe and he decided to take a crack at bringing El Muerto to life. Given his love of pro wrestling, that's not overly surprising, especially as he's impressed in a WWE ring on a number of occasions.

A few months ago, it was confirmed that El Muerto had lost its January 12, 2024 release date. The news didn't come as a huge surprise as there hadn't been any movement on the project for some time.

Now, though, it seems we can definitively say the movie has been scrapped.

In a Vanity Fair profile, Bad Bunny - who is joined by his publicist, Sujeylee Solá - was asked what happened to El Muerto. Widely thought to be his dream role, you'd think he'd have plenty to say. Not so.

"He hesitates. An awkward silence ripples across the table," the site's piece reads. "'Next question,' asserts Solá, who’s seated at an adjacent booth. 'I don’t know what to say,' Martínez replies, calling the issue 'delicate.' Solá sharpens the point. 'Obviously, it’s out,' she says of the film."

Moving forward, it sounds like the Bullet Train actor plans to move away from action-packed blockbusters. "As a movie consumer myself, I’m not one to watch a lot of action movies. I’d even say it’s my least favorite genre," Bad Bunny admits. "I would really like to play other kinds of things, like a little bit more drama, romance too, or comedy...[maybe] a history movie with a little action in it."

While the El Muerto character briefly tussled with Spider-Man in the squared circle, his main foe was El Dorado, a supernatural being who is responsible for granting his family these supernatural abilities. Tombstone was expected to be this movie's big bad, however.

Jonás Cuarón had been tapped to direct the movie based on a screenplay by Garreth Dunnet-Alcocer. Sony has yet to confirm they will no longer move forward with the project, though it's hard to imagine them wanting to now that Bad Bunny is no longer attached.

Ok so it's canceled then. This was clearly done just to be a vehicle for bad bunny.

Legit curious as to what Avi Arad's response is going to be. Dude's head is so far up his own ass, he thinks Bad Bunny just walked out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

Who the hell is bad bunny that he was offered Sony's slate of Marvel characters and he just had to pick his favourite ?? What did they want SO BAD in him that they just said "Whatever you chose, we'll do it !"

Is Sony hellbent on making stupid, worthless decisions deprived of any vision ? On one hand, they got the Spider-Verse movies, and then they turn around and pull this clownery.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - Most streamed artist on Spotify three years running, $400 million grossing world tour, three-time Gramny winner, first ever non-English language artist named MTV artist of the year, former WWE 24/7 Champion who wrestled at WrestleMania in 2021 and WWE Backlash in 2023, recurring role on Narcos, stole the show in Bullet Train.

@ClintThaHamster - Crazy how none of that should warrant a "your wish is my command" attitude from a studio.

But I'm aware this is Sony we are talking about. Not the sharpest tools in the shed.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - Seems to me that the most popular music artist in the world, who commands a massive fanbase throughout all of North and South America, and who has proven star power and charisma, is EXACTLY the kind of star to warrant a "your wish is my command" attitude from a studio.

@ClintThaHamster - well...as with most, or a lot of white americans...if it is anything or anyone other than what they know...they are completely ignorant of global superstars

@ClintThaHamster - Yes, but all of that is either in music or wrestling, which rarely mixes well with acting in movies. Surprisingly, considering wrestling is mostly stunt acting.

There's no reason to think his acting would be a cinematic draw.

@soupysales - Brad Pitt is a global superstar, not bad bunny

@OrgasmicPotatoe - Clearly there's some reason, because Sony offered him this deal. It's moot now, of course, but could have been good. Probably wouldn't have been a blockbuster hit, but I guarantee it would have been among the most successful films in the SPUMC (a low bar to clear, admittedly.)

The biggest disappointment of the year. I've been waiting for El Muerto movie for my whole life. It just won't be the same without Bad Bunny.

Bad Bunny is quite busy. It is no wonder that he doesn't have time for a project that would likely hurt his brand.

I hope this frees up time for another WWE-Puerto Rico show. I missed the last one and there is no doubt in my mind that I need to go to the next one.

Figured the movie was only thing because he was attached to it, so without him I doubt this'll ever happen. Bet no one minds though anyway.

Instead, Sony should focus on making a Wild Pack movie. Only way I can see them bring together their villains characters. Might not be he comics line-up, but it's better than a Sinister Six movie imo.

Blech!

I managed to make it this long without hearing one Bad Bunny song. He had that pretty big run, and I think that's the main reason why BB was offered the role.
