SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Star J.K. Simmons Explains J. Jonah Jameson's New Look In The MCU

Spider-Man: Far From Home featured the jaw-dropping return of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, and the actor has now opened up about the thinking that went into changing the character's appearance...

Spider-Man: Far From Home delivered a lot of big surprises, but by far the biggest came in the movie's mid-credits scene when J.K. Simmons unexpectedly reprised the role of J. Jonah Jameson.

The actor originally played the character in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of JJJ has both a different appearance and runs TheDailyBugle.net rather than serving as the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Bugle newspaper.

During a recent interview with Collider, Simmons addressed the former point, indicating that he disagreed somewhat with Marvel Studios about the portrayal of Jonah from a visual standpoint.

"The only thing we didn’t a hundred percent see eye to eye on, I think, was how much is this character going to be the character from, I think, the comic books and from the Sam Raimi original trilogy, and how much do we want to evolve it and to have it be more contemporary."

"I was very attached to what I had done previously for a variety of reasons," the actor continued. "So I guess the compromise ended up being no hair. [laughter] Which I think honestly, that decision might’ve just been them going, ‘We don’t have time to make a wig. We got to shoot him tomorrow in the office.’ So, J. Jonah Jameson either lost his hair in the last few years, or he was wearing a hairpiece the whole time. I don’t know, you pick."

It's definitely interesting to think about how the character could evolve moving forward, and it's believed Jonah could become a recurring presence in Sony Pictures' Universe of Marvel Characters.

Time will tell on that front, but seeing more of him in the MCU for Spider-Man 3 is a must!

@TheUnworthyThor - Ditto. The Raimi film nailed the comic book Jameson look.

To be honest, I don't see why the Daily Bugle needed to be a fringe website to be contemporary. I feel like it would be more topical and modern if it was a Fox News/CNN-type "news" network instead.

@Darkknight2149 - Say what you will with FoxNews, CNN, MSNBC, they have their obvious slants, but they DO report on actual news.

Sites like InfoWars peddle heavily in conspiracies and tabloid style journalism, with just enough real world news to lend credence, plus their actual followers are [frick]ing fervent in their devotion and likelihood of acting on shoddy information, which is exactly what Mysterio was banking on against Peter.

Fox News is the propaganda arm of the American Republican party. On top of being founded as such, people who consume Fox News regularly are empirically less informed than people who consume no news at all:

CNN and MSNBC are not quite as egregious, but have still been known to have a heavy corporatist/government establishment bias that affects their factual reporting (such as how CNN reported climate change, or when they got Andrew Cuomo's own brother to interview him about Coronavirus in NYC).

Besides, in Marvel canon, I think the implication is that the Daily Bugle is fine with most "sky is blue" reporting but has a heavy anti-Spiderman slant (with JJJ also being okay with occasional libel).

I want JJJ's hairstyle to be the indicator of which Marvel universe (Marvel or Sony) we're watching

I still want the hair back. I’m a little surprised (though I guess it’s understandable) that Sony didn’t keep the wig- but maybe it... deteriorated, or something. I don’t know how they work. Secondly, could they not have shuffled or extended shooting, or was this an addition at the last minute?

@WeaponXCII - Could be also possible that maybe they sold it off, given sometimes studios sell props used in their films

I'm glad they got JK back, but I am a little disappointed that they didn't recast Jameson with Nick Offerman. I think he would have been a great Jameson.

The hair really completed the look. But just having J. K. Simmons back, couldn't ask for anything more.

I think Marvel Studios' decision – as far as the hair goes – was a good one. It shows that the character has evolved, at least as far as his physical appearance goes, which makes sense. To have J Jonah Jamison look as he did in the Raimi movies would have been not only visually awkward, but the worse sort of fan service.
