As a kid from New York City, Peter Parker would not listen to MGMT. People in Connecticut probably don't listen to MGMT. Nobody listens to MGMT now, nobody listened to them when they were popular in 2007. It was that ONE song they had that was big and that was it. There were plenty of better bands to choose songs from for this trailer, but the went with MGMT. However, my point rests is that if the movie is selling itself on Spider-Man, it should sell itself on something Spider-Man would actually listen to. A kid from Queens, New York City, Spider-Man is a product from the 60s and as such, in the 60s, I'd expect him to listen to The Dubs or the Blues Project. This Spider-Man is what, fifteen, sixteen? Born in 1999 or 2000? Yeah, he's not going to listen to MGMT and the movie shouldn't sell itself off of him listening to it either.
This Spider-Man, from Queens, New York City, is going to be listening to Nas. Why Nas? Spider-Man is a classy guy. He's intelligent, he listens to intelligent music. He's going to listen to rap, but he's not going to listen to Trey "Mr. Steal Your Girl and Slap that Phat Ass" Songz rap. He's going to listen to rap that is poetry, rap that actually teaches lessons. Rap that is only rap because in any other form it would be beautiful R&B and Jazz. Rap, which if originally published in written form would be the greatest modern poetry. That is what Peter Parker would be listening to. He'd go Reasonable Doubt over Watch the Throne, Illmatic over Take Care. So, I recut the trailer and set it to probably the greatest hip hop song of all time: NY State of Mind.
I set it to NY State of Mind because it's representative of everything Spider-Man is. He's the guardian of New York, he watches the crimes and then he hops in and saves the day. Think of the line "Beyond the Walls of Intelligence life is defined, when I think of crime I'm in a New York State of Mind". Does that one line not speak more Spider-Man to you than the entire MGMT discography? The MGMT song speaks high school, sure, but Spider-Man, even in high school, is more than where he goes to study. He's about how he uses what he has learned, the relationships he has with his family, his friends, his wife/girlfriend and why he protects the city of New York. It's funny because Sony is signed to Nas - the greatest hip hop artist and modern poet of our generation. Instead of getting him to work on a project about Spider-Man, a project which generally makes full use of its NYC setting - they have him making clothes for Ghostbusters movies.
